Depends on what you consider popular. Compared to WoW it isn't, but that is true of every mmo. Take WoW out of the equation and Rift is one of the most successful and popular mmos.Won't fix the fundamental reasons the game isn't very popular. Will be cool to finish the expansion at some point maybe though.
Rift fans are delusional. I'm convinced of that. They are truly believe their game is successful and popular when everything points to that being false. There is a reason this game went F2P and it isn't because a ton of people were playing it. Storm Legion barely registered on the radar in terms of sales, Trion saw this and here we are.Depends on what you consider popular. Compared to WoW it isn't, but that is true of every mmo. Been playing a lot the last couple of weeks, started new toons on a few servers (was lost on my level 50s) to get a feel for the game and community again. The servers are all very busy and I've been enjoying myself more than I thought I would. F2P will bring even more players. Haven't tackled the 50 - 60 grind yet, I hear that is brutal.
Every game is going F2P. Even WoW will eventually if their numbers continue to decline (and they will according to Blizzard). F2P is a fact of life for all mmos. Trion was just being proactive and did it before it became absolutely necessary. And I suspect they did it to make more money. The fact is is F2P is very profitable.Rift fans are delusional. They've done a lot of good things and added some nice content to this game. It isn't fresh, but it satisfies ones MMO itch nicely. I wouldn't pay a sub for this, but I'll fire it up and play out the new content, too.Won't fix the fundamental reasons the game isn't very popular. Rift may not have been a failure at launch, but everything after that was. The expansion failed to bring back the legions of people that quit the game once the new wore off.Ok, so you don't have anything. Trion was able to obtain financing for Defiant and End of Nations because of Rift's success. They also have WarFace and will be publishing Arche Age in the west. None of this would have been possible if Rift was the failure you all claim.
I'm not saying Rift is the most successful game or even second but it is obviously in the top ten. Out of the tons of mmo's out there, that makes it top tier, ie one of the most successful and popular. Not sure why anyone would think otherwise, except for personal reasons.
I'm not even a huge fan of the game. I think Trion is one of the better gaming companies though.
