Enjoyed enough over the last few days to buy patron for three months. Figure I'll get bored by then again. Had quite a few credits I don't recall buying, but who knows.
started over as a warrior again to get the feel for things, got to 25, and think I'll just go ahead and level my 60 warrior up. Logged into him initially and bags were full of stuff I had no clue what was I didn't want to take the time to sort shit out. But since there's zero reason to have an alt of the same class, feels dumb spending any more time on the new one.

Came back for first time since Storm Legion, hopped on the old Riftstalker, game is still enjoyable. XP curve in Nightmare Tide seems wonky though. I will hit 63 before leaving Gaboro Reef it seems. Not complaining since Starfall is where all the action is it. It is interesting to see though, the progression of power seems very linear through the first two expansions, but I am seeing level 70s with quadruple or more stats/hp than I have. Looks like the third expansion finally kicks in the mudflation on gear more ala EQ or WoW.

That and IA's, but like Ambi says, dungeons. I had the same problem when the expansion launched.

It depends on the class and the role you want to play. As a rogue for example, if you want DPS or Tank, none of the DLC souls matter since the best dps or tank rogue builds use only classic souls. If you want to heal or do a raidsupport bard/tactician build, you need the DLC souls for the "best" builds.
I'm not as familiar with the other classes to say how much the DLC souls matter. I think a lot of mage builds use Harbinger (storm legion soul), but again, I'm not too sure. Primalist is an entirely new class, so playing that at all requires unlocking.
All of this stuff can technically be unlocked through gameplay by buying REX on the auction house with platinum and using that for unlocks, but it's going to take a lot of platinum going that route.

They reworked a lot of souls around 4.0 so a lot has changed - many of the 1 button macro builds are dead. In addition to the free expansion promo, i also got an email to return to Rift which gave me a code for the Ascended Essentials Pack, 1 month patron and a full calendar month of login rewards - might want to check your emails to see if you got one too.
Geez the level 60+ leveling times suck. Dusted off the 60 warrior and decided to jump into intrepid adventures and took about 4 hours to get to 62 (was halfway to 61). Not used to grinds anymore what with playing diablo and wow and shit where there's zero time spent leveling practically.
It wasn't horrible, but it was extremely repetitious grinding through hammerknell over and over, nothing else popped up.
Any better way to get to 65? Or just IA all the way and hope for some decent stuff from the caches.

I just went through this myself not too long ago. The 60-65 game is indeed awful. My best advice is to grind through the storyline and quest hubs in Plane of Water (if you can stomach it) while mixing in the IAs. Once you hit 66, immediately head to the new expansion areas.

With Patron, I went from 65 to 69.2 by doing every single non-repeatable quest in the 4 expansion zones (including the carnages and sidequests). For the last 80% of 69 I used one of those +160% exp pots and did the daily storyline instance of each of the 4 zones over three days (staying logged out so the potion didn't expire during those three days while the daily quest was on cooldown). With patron and the xp pot, each of those dailies gave 7% of a level (per quest, so about 28% of a level doing all 4 zones per day).
Now that I've hit 70, I ran a few expert dungeons to check them out, but I'm not really into the end-game gear / reputation / currency grind, so I'll probably go back to just logging in to play one of my alts once a month until the next big expansion.
I did enjoy the week or so of leveling through the new stuff, and since it was completely free, you can't ask for much more than that.

For general leveling, should I be grinding zones or are things like the instant adventures viable? Did one for the first time last night with my 30s bard and nobody seemed to understand what to do. I joined as 2 people were making their way to a rift on the other side of a castle, then 10 things had to be escorted to an area. By this time 3-4 more had joined, and 10 minutes later only 1 of the 10 had been escorted (I didn't understand where they were, but I also hadn't played in years, surely others had, lol) and time was going to run out.
Then again, pretty sure I saw somewhere the option to boost a new character to 60 or 65. Maybe I should just do that.
My bard heals boosted to 60 sure were garbage, but at least I was able to hold my own against 1-2 mobs at a time.

IAs are the way to go up until 60, then story quests until 70.
Try and avoid getting caught up in carnage quests. Let them come naturally and if you just need a kill or two to finish then go ahead, otherwise they're not worth.

Good grief! Been playing this game for less than a year and the community is absolutely fucking terrible. So many players who seemingly log in on a daily basis just to shit on the game and/or Trion. I don't get it. If you hate the fucking game, why log in and play.
The game has its issues and isn't a long-term thing for me personally but overall, it's decent and solid. But it has easily the shittiest attitude of any playerbase I've run across in my 20 years of MMO gaming.
