I think people should be able to freely say "putin's russia faced an existential threat from infinitely expanding nato and in response used it's military to take some of nato's potential future assets of the board". Why does expressing understanding for motivations immediately translate to "support" to you?
I don't think anyone here wants to see innocent people getting killed or countries starting new wars, but it's easy to see how this conflict has been brewing for quite some time and some form of escalation was inevitable.

It's called putting yourself in someone else's shoes to understand their perspective. It's really not that hard with a modicum of effort.
I believe just about anyone in Putin's position who cares about the preservation of their country would have acted in a similar way given the circumstances. Doesn't mean I am happy for what happened or want to see Ukraine obliterated.
