I imagine this will be the theme of a CSI or NCIS soon.

"Mr. President, hackers have infiltrated our infrastructure and tied the wires in a fashion that all the 1's are going to their server and we're only getting the 0's!"
"Dammit Johnson! Tell me whats going on in plain english I don't speak computer mumbo jumbo!"
"Mr. President, let me put it to you this way. The 1's contain all the information. All the state secrets. All your personal information. (Johnson leans closer to whisper) All the pictures of you in *ahem* compromising situations."
"<President stares blankly at a wall> Those sons of bitches have gone too far this time. This is an act of cyber war."

So what causes a router to fail? My router has started to drop connecting and reset itself, but why would this just start happening. Firmware is up to date. It's a dlink dir-655.

Gonna be looking at black Friday deals on a router.

Not making the leap to AC, so recommendations on best N router out there?

Thanks! Heard good things about the Mikrotik stuff.

Are AC routers worth it? Looking at the ASUS 66u routers and they have the older N router and the newer model that does AC for $32 more. I feel that I might as well roll with the AC when it's not that big of a price difference?

Edit: and then you have TP brand throwing kinks in the mix. For the next 24 hours this router is discounted. Reason this one is worse off than an ASUS?

Can someone explain to me in layman terms why purchasing a router is better or more beneficial then just using the standard router that is provided with your ISP company. I'm all about increasing performance and having more options available to me if I might actually use those things.

It's cheaper. Or, you're with one of the few companies that doesn't charge a rental fee.
It's cheaper and those rental ones usually have real shitty processors which doesn't allow you to have as many connections concurrently. You think to yourself "not an issue, I usually just browse the web and maybe torrent a bit, I don't need a lot of connections". Torrenting is a ton of connections to every IP it can in that torrent.

Oh yea, I completely forgot that I'm paying to rent their router. $7 a month, for 2 years now. I guess that would make purchasing a router cheaper for sure.
yup, depending on which model you get, pays for itself after 6 to 12months.

Hell i remember back in 2001, comcast charged 3bucks for the rental fee, not only did i buy a modem and stay there for 6 years, i moved resubbed to comcast and used the same bought modem. The comcast guys that were there (i literally moved into the apt as they pulled up) were wondering wtf was i doing. I just said, come in, this looks like the cable jack, oh here is my own modem (i had it in my car), direct connected it to my laptop (i didn't want to bother w/ my router just yet, i was still moving in shit) and they were gone in 10mins, i also had to raid in 1 hour too!

and yea this model is great

Amazon.com: Mikrotik RB951G-2HND 5-Port Gigabit Wireless AP 1000mW: Computers Accessories

i actually have the one down, the 100mb since i already have my network hooked up to a previous gigabit bridge.

There's a lot of settings i have no idea on, i did learn how to create a separate wireless SSID "WHOLEFOODSSUCKSYOUFAGGOTS", cuz i live right across from wholefoods and i could still see my SSIDS from their cafe, that's about the only thing i learned to do, other than that, all plug in play.

Comcast was charging 8 bucks a month for a DOCIS 3 modem I believe. Can be bought for 20 bucks on Amazon.
