Its the reason why wall street is against such a merger. Lowers the ability for american wireless providers to fuck us

CenturyLink just announced it will be offering 1gb connections at $109 per month, the new service is said to be "symmetrical," meaning its download and upload speeds are about the same. It'll be $80 a month if you bundle with satellite TV and phone.

In addition to the Twin Cities, 12 other U.S. metro areas are getting CenturyLink's gigabit-per-second Internet service, solely for businesses in some places and for both business and homes in others. CenturyLink has already tested this service in Omaha, Neb., Las Vegas and Salt Lake City.

Looks like it's about time I switch back, I already canceled my TV and Phone with comcast a month or so ago and their internet has been pretty shitty as of late. I will gladly pay $109 a month for 1GB with them as I had nothing but great things to say about their 40/60/80mb services here in Minneapolis.

Fucking Illinois is a Comcast/AT&T wasteland(well at least near the Chicago area). Another reason why we are the shittest state in the country.

I love the idea of free market but I hate that banks and lobbying can prevent a fair and free market which is a good part of what is wrong in this country.
If someone can come in provide the same service and make money at half the cost of others, more power to them. It is what keeps that shit in check. Sadly that is not the plan of the companies, government and bankers.

The older I get the more I want to see the whole place burn down.

Not to make this into the political thread, but this is why I haven't voted for a Republican or Democrat for the last 14 years. Any time you hear about something that might disrupt the status quo, it gets crushed by the dream team of congress and the existing big corporations with the occasional assist from the FCC or FTC. The only reason that Google has gotten as far as they have is that they have as many lobbyists and as much money and can make as much noise as Comcast and Verizon. Luckily they seem to be mostly a force for good in this arena, but that will only last as long as they feel it is in their best interest as a company.

Why the hell do they need direct tv if you are getting fiber from them? They have this thing called prism in the phoenix area.
You don't need to get anything, you can just get their internet if you want. Prism isn't available in all areas, it's very limited right now.

Fiber from them is a brand new thing though. They used to be Qwest, an old phone company, that transitioned to just DSL, so they never had a TV service. They partnered with Dish or DirecTV, so they could offer packages just like Cox does, the local cable company here in Phoenix.

I'd imagine their partnership with DirecTV or DIsh will go away since they are rolling out Fiber and their own TV service.
They've had Fiber for the last 5 years or so. And their Television service (Prisim) is still a long ways out from a nationwide rollout. Their agreement with Direct and Dish will go at least another 4 or 5 years minimum.

Comcast just doubled my speed to 105Mbps for free. Shocked, lol.
Cox did the same in the Phoenix area. Their "Preferred" tier went from 25/5 to 50/5 and their "Premiere" tier went from 50/10 to 100/10. Idk why either. No new providers showed up. Just a maybe for google fiber.

They all do it time to time, hell even when Torture Warner Cable took over Insight here last year they bumped up the standard from 10 to 15mb, what made no sense was they kept the high priced 20mb option as well, like someone was going to upgrade from 15 to 20 for like $15 more a month instead to 30mb for $20. I think they have since re-tiered it to $10 each but for a year it was silly.

Time Warner Cable is annoying me greatly

for the past 2 weeks, my internet shoots craps everytime it rains. I call TW, they go through all the usual testing crap, after half an hour they figure out that they need to send out a tech the next day, and then when the tech comes everything is back to fine because the line generally works again once it dries out several hours after raining.

It rained yesterday morning, I had no internet until about 2pm, then it rained at 4 and my internet was out until about 10pm.

Annoying as all hell, and they can't figure out where the problem is since everything works by the time they come out. A traceroute basically fails at the first hop past my router and cable modem, so it has to be my local line that is buried in the yard or whatever but they seem real hesitant to even attempt to fix that, as I'm sure it's expensive to dig up and replace.

I need Google Fiber ASAP

Sounds like water on the line.

There was a dude on reddit last week with Comcast that had the same problem. The rep gave the guy a number to call to find out about the status of when his internet would be back on. When the guy called it he said it was a phone number to the weather channel..

Can you replicate the problem by hitting the box coming into the house with a hose?

I've had that happen 3 times over 15 years of cable internet. Everytime it was the same thing causing it, and it was always fine when they came.
Up on the pole line is a electronic box with hookups that direct signal to a address( so they can track who gets what and it also controls power and other assorted crap ). In my cases 2 was rain and 1 was just high humidity. Ask the next tech to check that. Chances are when he opens it up, water pours out.
The bad news is the Tech can't fix it. They have to bring in the cable truck to replace it and getting them to do so basically requires getting the Tech to make the call.

If I switch to FiOS, do I have any additional expenses compared to cable? I guess I'll need a new modem, but do I also have to pay for a landline?

If it's like regular DSL you'll need the land line. When we had DSL a while back we had to at least get the most basic phone line plan.
