Yep, a good blade combined with a good shaving cream/oil routine will offer almost no resistance. My beard is really coarse, the only blade to ever offer that feeling for me are the feathers, most others tug to varying degrees. If you prep properly and use a blade that gets along well with your face, very little pressure is required. That's what causes most people to nick/cut themselves when first starting, they push way too hard. I always err on the side of too little pressure when testing out a new blade, you can always push a little harder on a second pass if the first pass didn't do much.

I watched all the prep videos and finally found a good use for my Shark portable steam cleaner lol. Just used that on my face since the steam isn't that hot and then applied the shaving soap. Probably going to get the Fogless mirror for the shower because I really fucking hate cleaning the sink.

Oh shit, I LOVE my fogless mirror in the shower. If you're not shaving in the shower you're doing it wrong! (Unless your shower is nasty) ^_^

Just ordered that because of this thread. Day 2 with the razor was smooth as butter. I'm cleaning my blades with distilled water and drying them to see how long they last. Can't believe how long I used that fucking shitty electric razor. I'm a real man now!

That's the mirror I have, based on the recommendation of someone here. Just realize that you have to pull the mirror off of its mount and fill it with hot water to get it to be "fogless" each time you shower. Not really a big deal at all, takes all of 30 seconds, I just didn't realize that when I ordered it, I just thought it was some kind of magical mirror that didn't fog, lol.

Definitely let us know what you find out with the distilled water/drying technique, I've heard of people doing that but have never tried it myself. If it doubles or triples the usable life of a blade, it might be worth it(figuring cost/hassle of distilled water vs going through blades faster)

For real. I can't understand why people ever stopped shaving with these oldschool razors in the first place. I guess at this point we've all been brainwashed into thinking cartridges/electric razors are the only way to shave. Until this thread popped up it had never even occurred to me that there were alternatives.

I think it was a slow progression of disposable razors. First the cheap little 1-blade bics came out, and people loved them. They weren't much more expensive than buying razor blades, and you could just throw the whole device away and use a new one every week or two, no hassle with changing blades. Then slowly over time, the complexity/price started creeping up as gillette and others introduced 2 blades, 3 blades, 4 blades, vibrating razors, 4 blades + trimming blade on the back, etc. As that slowly changed over the years and the prices became outrageous, people woke up and realized they were spending a fortune on something that was traditionally pretty cheap. The stupid shaving arms race of adding more and more blades is going to eventually hurt the razor companies as they are pricing people out of something that should be cheap and easy. Nobody wants to pay $4-$5 a pop for a razor cartridge that doesn't last much longer than a 10 cent double-edged razor blade. Thats just ridiculous.

Unfortunately this is the secret behind all "fogless" mirrors, gotta acclimate them to the water temp before they work properly. Problem is, most of them you need to pull the suction cups off the wall to do it. This one seems pretty convenient, may upgrade my shitty Target mirror.

Because I'm shaving with a Gillette razor made in 1955. It still looks and functions like it did the day it was made. Gillette and others learned that there wasn't going to be much of a future for them if they continued to make a razor that lasted forever. They needed to create a reason for everyone to buy a new razor every couple of years. The multi-blade race was on. I think we're up to five. They aren't better, but that isn't the point.

I'm just curious on this, but could you not just put a layer of shaving cream on the mirror and wipe it off and any mirror would be fogless for quite some time? That's how it works on regular mirrors in the bathroom. Some old wives trick or some shit.

It's hard for people to believe that the weight of the razor by itself is enough to shave with. Try not to push against your face at all, trust in the feathers.

Try stretching your skin a bit. Nicks and cuts can be caused my the unevenness of the skin and stretching can provide a smoother shaving surface. Another tip is never use pressure. Let the razor glide on top of your skin. Just remember to not use Derby (beatingdeadhorse.jpg) and you'll be fine.

I still like my Derby's. I use a heavy Merkur handle too, so I dunno.

Just ordered some Taylor's avocado shaving cream, can't wait for it. Been stuck using gilette canned shit while it ships, my face feels so dry and it rips in half when I try to shave.

Most people will tell you preshave makes a difference. I don't use any myself and I am fine with it. Just stick with what you have now... If it's not working out try adding pre-shave.

The problem is i used to buy the ten pack bags of cheap schtick razors. Now they don't work. Did my hair change, or did the companies change the razors so that we would HAVE to buy the expensive kind?

The sample pack I bought came with two different packs of Dorso blades, st-300 and st-310. I have no idea what that means, so I tried the st-310. Comparable shave and closeness to the Astra and I didn't nick myself once, really nice. I'm giving each of these blades 3 shaves and I shave 2-3 times per week, so we will see how it goes.

Whats the proper cleaning method for handles? Mine is still pretty clean, but a bit gunky and probably tarnished in spots. Usually I just wash with soap and water, but is there a better, more preferred way?

Also, I recently got a huge pimple on my chin. Thought I'd be a boss and just shave right over it and instead I took the whole thing clean off. Now it's been scarred for a week and hurts like fuck. Worst idea ever.
