Downloading right meow.

Might stream a bit tomorrow night EST, probably friday.

Edit:
ahahahahaha the login screen music is so nostalgically cheesy. I love it.
can someone give the tl/dr description of this game? Is it an MMO? Single player? Both? What makes it interesting? I read the kickstarter way back when and it seemed like they didn't even know.

I'm pretty much going into this blind. I only got into it because the Founders pack deal was ending, and I enjoyed playing UO back in the day.

From what I could tell, it seems like Diablo2 style offline/online play, except the online part isn't capped to like 4 people.

Not much else to say until I play it. There are some streams from previous releases on Youtube.

Same here.

UO was the first MMO I ever played and, because there is so many terrible MMOs out, I'm willing to give this a chance.

Same here and that founder's pack deal a week ago was too tempting to pass on. Cheap investment with little risk.

Is the download speed on the launcher capped at 50 Kb/s or something? I left it running all night long and I'm only at 76%. Taking forever!

I think the patcher is torrent-p2p based. So if you don't have the ports open supporting that it might be slow.
The patcher will attempt to use P2P first and will fallback on http if it can't connect. I think the timeout might be 5 minutes but they may have shortened that to 1 minute in later builds. If your patcher gets stuck at some point, it's better to quit it and relaunch as it will recover quicker.

Anyone played the new build yet? Is it still "I have know fucking idea what I am doing, where is the forums with instructions" still?

*Edit*

There are afewmore things implemented here, but I still barely know what the hell I am doing. Still too alpha for me. Excited about the prospects thought, and I think a great game will come out of this.

If its up and I'm not busy or otherwise wanting a nap after work, I'll probably be streaming it for an hour or two tonight. 6pmish EST.

Edit:
Streaming in a few mins onTwitch. I have no idea what I'm doing lol.

Played and streamed for about an hour. Mostly just getting my bearings. Not sure whats actually playable other than the small town at login.

Limited combat and spell casting works.

NPC interaction is through chat and clicking chat links (You say hello in public chat to talk to the npc, click keywords in the response in the chat box).

There's no map I could find, but there is a compass.

It was cool climbing up to the ramparts to see the whole town, find your bearings etc. It was neat to discover quests again by talking to NPCs, as opposed to following !'s. Definitely getting a UO 2.0 vibe from it so far.

Anyone care to elaborate on the game a bit... most people around the water cooler are saying it is but it isn't a MMO. Small write up in this month's GameInformer also categorizes it as a MMO. Has MMO become more a loose term? Who would have thought the genre would become such a mess.

It has some new ideas to get our heads around.

It's a persistent online sand box world.

Skill based characters.

Zones will instance if it gets over say 100 players.

Overland zones are presently (and this is up in the air undergoing testing) presented as a map kind of like the map on the credits of Game of Thrones - this allows story content, random events etc to be cycled in. You can choose to enter any part of this 'map' as you travel and re enter the world. It will also have fast travel once you have visited places, like recall/gate/portal

Significant numbers of types of characters can be non combat like in UO.

Over the next 5 years annually 5 chapters of an RPG will be released set in this persistent online world

You can play in the world offline solo - if you do this you can never log this character into the persistent world

You can play online solo - you are still in the persistent world but you will not encounter real players - this character can be brought in and out of the 'MMO' world at will (per session, ie logging in and out)

It is single world - if you own a shop/house with vendors that house, shop and vendor will be in every instance of the game, both online and online solo

It will have PvP - for example guilds can declare themselves as PvP

It's in alpha testing, their communication is as open as Georgeson on EQN:L and they are meeting every target and milestone

Garrott is quite clear in interviews - this is Ultima Online 2.0 except he doesn't own certain trademarked names. In essence it's UO 2.0 with 15 years worth of him thinking how he would/should have done it.

Think of it like Diablo2.

You have an offline character you can single player through the game, maybe even with a few friends online.

There is also a separate online-only character you use to play the MMO-modified version. It's mostly the same, but with things like chat, guilds, grouping, instancing, maybe separate servers, etc. Things will be tweaked to support hundreds of players. How specifically it scales or is modified more is something we'll have to wait and see.

I ran around awhile. Lots of people out in that hilly zone with the dungeony looking icon. I picked up some healing and a sun based nuke. Casting is a bit goofy right now, kind of hard to target and couldn't really get the heal other person spell to go off. Also sometimes the 123 keys wouldn't work but clicking on the icons would so they've got some stuff to fix, but it's getting there.

Distant fights would show flying numbers really far off and through terrain, which was kind of goofy but I kind of hope they keep it. Was neat to see all the fights going on.

So you have an option to play the MMO version of the game? In that version the world has zones each up to 100 characters before another zone is created? However you can make and Offline character or Online Solo? (Not sure why people would want that but i'm sure they do) but if you are in this MMO world does it work essentially like any other MMO? People wandering around, grouping, trying to advance their character?

You have a persistant character, but you dont actually have a complete persistant world from my understanding. You travel on an overland map to certain locations that then feature a playable area (kinda like BG or Dragon Age Origins). Although housing appears to be limited by available space, if someone takes a plot it always shows his house in all instances of the playable area, where in other games (except UO and EVE I guess) housing was instanced so that several people could have the same spot.

Yeah every time you login you choose single player or online version.

More or less. Remember its still in early alpha. Things like that haven't been nailed down yet as to 'How do we handle 100 people in a zone? Make a new instance? Population caps? Disperse people to another server entirely? Upgrade server architecture to support even more players?'

But for all intents and purposes yes, its a MMO. You'll see other people adventuring, be able to group with them and all that jazz. I dont know if they'll be able to match like, Planetside2 with 600 players running around in the same area. But you can probably reasonably expect them to get at least 100 or whatever numbers UO could get back in the day.

100 is the bare minimum I would say for a multiplayer game to tiptoe over into the MMO realm.

Edit:
Whoops just saw Flight said it just does a new instance at 100.

Any comparable feel to the game? UO, EQ, DAoC, WoW? Just curious.. just for UO sake i'm thinking about trying it.

Yes, yes, yes, yes and ... yes.

large parts of the world are persistent but some of the zones between the persistent areas can be cycled or allow for the RPG elements to be introduced.

That's just an arbitrary number from the dev chat above mate. They'e had 64 with no problems in early testing and the number 100 was mentioned.
