And that worked? I still have to walk my mom step by step on how to type "Find my phone" into Google on her laptop every time she loses her phone (which is at least once a week).
She texted me one , fuck it you know what I'll post it.

Broke my Pixel 7 Pro today when changing to winter tires. Dropped right on to the concrete floor, screen first. Totally shattered the display.

I got insurance but as it was a cheaper phone I dont think its worth enough today to fix for the insurance company. Should be considered 50% value after a year and from what I see they charge up to 400 bucks for a screen replacement.

Really considering just getting the Pixel 9 Pro XL as I was very happy with my 7 pro. The price difference with mobile plan does not seem to be much going from the 9 Pro to the 9 Pro XL.

9 Pro vs 9 Pro XL?

Been a long time since I used a phone under 6.7 inch.

If you do go again with a pixel don't do shit until it has a case, those screens are shit

I disagree. I have dropped my Pixel 8 literally like 500 times and it's pristine.

Ordered the Pixel 9 Pro XL. Should arrive tomorrow. If they fix or replace the 7 Pro I'll probably sell it.

I don't really enjoy using cases. I usually use them when the phone is new but take it off after a few months, however that's when I end up breaking them.

I did order a Ringke case and dust free screen protector 2 pack, maybe I can make the phone survive with that for a while.

I'm really a hater but the 9 is a solid phone, I hate recommending it. If I had the option I would go with something more open

What does more open mean? Some weirdo linux phone?

I'm holding out for the 10 myself though.

Got the 9 Pro XL today, just finished setting it up.

I like it a lot, feels a bit more premium than my old 7 Pro.

I did not realize until now how much better a non curved display is. I've had a curved one ever since Samsung started that shit a few years ago and it seemed everyone copied it.

Feels much better with a flat screen and some bezels around it.

Edit: I think this is the first phone I wont run at 100% screen brightness, damn this is bright.

What web browser do you all use?

I feel the Samsung Internet is the smoothest but I have not tried all of them.

Bought a Bare Naked Case from China.

I dont usually like having a case but this one is ultra slim. Really happy with it but it was a bit pricey.

Anyone have luck with resurrecting, even if only for 5m, a Pixel 5a? It will turn on, but only just briefly. And not long enough for me to complete 2FA for my wife's account.

Which leads to my other question. We've been trying to recover my wife's account since her phone died. The phone was her main device. We have access to the recovery email and when we initiate the recovery process, Google says we'll get a link in 2 days. Without fail for the last 4 days, that gets canceled around 9PM EST because Google thinks something signed onto her account.

Phone's dead, we haven't been trying to boot it up. We can't think of any other devices that have access to her account. Google won't tell us what's going on nor let us further prove that the account is hers. Is there something we can try to get her account back?

Google customer service is absolute shit when you're trying to do anything that their automated stuff can't help you with. Is she signed into any other devices, like Chrome on a PC?

A quick search brings up the 5a was prone to motherboard failures, so that may be your issue. Google even offered a 2 year extended repair program for it. If you can find a replacement motherboard for a reasonable price and are feeling adventurous, you could try replacing it yourself. If all you need to do is get it functional enough to validate 2FA, you don't need to do a perfect job, just make sure not to completely break the display.

This kind of shit is why I hate 2FA that doesn't have redundant methods built in and am hesitant to use passkeys. I want to be able to log in to important accounts like Google with the the contents of my brain and not be dependent on any devices that I might not have on me or have failed.

Edit: Just noticed that you said you don't think she's logged into her account on any other devices. That sucks. I know that I had to recover my Dad's Google account maybe a decade or more ago and there once was an option to validate a bunch of info about the account and have them send a reset link to another email. Since then, I have my account set as the recovery account for his.

Another wrinkle is that 2FA is enabled and the phone number is Google Voice. If it was a non-Google phone number, substituting the nano sim onto another device would have been an easy fix.

It's likely that motherboard issue. We purchased this back in August, 2021, might still be eligible for a fix. But that won't help because I'm pretty sure that will wipe the phone. The current value of the bricked phone is that it can be used to validate her account on another device immediately so that we don't have to figure out where this mysterious ~9PM cancelation is coming from.

2FA is can definitely be annoying but I think this is more of Google support ineptitude. This is where a human should be able to step in, collect enough proof, and override immediately. If they're going to provide a link in 2 days automatically, why not one immediately?

Ugh, Google Voice. A podcast I used to listen to years ago had one of their hosts set up 2FA live on the show when it first became available and Google Voice was his primary number. He got caught in a loop and got locked out of his Google account. He had to use his contacts at Google to unfuck it.

Check TVs, Chromecast devices, Nest Hub, etc. Any device you might have signed into google on.

Google Voice was useful initially because our house is in a cellular deadspot. But its functionally antiquated and most carriers have implemented seamless wifi calling, so I'm going to port our numbers after this. Was working on it previously, but since we got the number a different "business unit", it's not so easy for ATT to figure out.

We're going through and shutting off any devices that *might* have access. I can't make heads or tails as to which is the smoking gun. It could be the device I'm posting from now, we share our account(within the house) liberally for convenience. The only way to see what's linked to the account is...to sign into the account. Not looking forward to a bored wife with no devices for two days.
