No, Portugal winning the World Cup is like a pipe dream that hardcore Portuguese fans idolize and covet. When Eusebio was rampaging across Europe for Benfica, Portugal were formidable, and then went into obscurity for 35 years until Figo and the golden age Pauleta etc emerged. They couldnt get that 2004 Euro in Lisbon like you said, Ronaldo was only 18 in that game.

Even though he did get hurt in the 2016 final, and Eder is a national hero for that late goal against France at the Parc de Princess, his exploits leading up the the knockout stage were just amazing and his performances were huge in all the games that mattered. Like I said before Renato Sanches saved them against Poland, but other than that Ronaldo was huge for a team without him wouldnt even qualify for that tournament. (although to be fair, Bernardo Silva and Andre Silva have been revelations for Portugal, and Manuel Santos was the perfect coach at the perfect time.)

edit: Salah might be the most incredible story this entire football season. I always loved the guy, but even I didnt think he was capable of reaching these heights. An Egyptian national, fucking bossing elite teams in CL play. Man City were won of the greatest sides of all time this year, and if Liverpool sink them, Im sure Salah will be a huge reason it happens.

Even though he did get hurt in the 2016 final,

Even that was an accomplishment. The French strategy for the game apparently was "let's kick ronaldo in the knee until he folds". He was fouled over and over in those first 30 minutes until he was substituted. It was gross. The French had fuck all after that, they apparently expected the remaining team would be a walk in the park. They just messed around until it was 0:1 and they lost. Worst Final I've ever seen.

as for today, it looks like in all four quarter final games one team scores three goals. Liverpool, Real, Barca and Sevilla.

Edit: feh, Roma scored...

Never say never in some of these, although I'd say the Madrid/Juvy and Barca/Roma ties are already over. Frankly the Liverpool/Man City tie is all but over, the only thing that gives me pause is LIverpool's defense going to Manchester. Problem there is I can't see their offense being held in check completely, and if they get 2 away goals City would need 6 which...yeah, just unlikely as hell.

France should of lost that 2006 World Cup quarter final I think in Germany to Portugal but Henry flopped for a ridiculous penalty in the dying moments of regulation. The officiating was also horrible in that match, the football gods righted that wrong with Eders strike for the ages.

Yeah, remember how the referee undid PSGs 4-0 against Barcelona last year.

That's why you always leave open that miracle scenario. It's happened before, it will happen again. Roma I just don't think is strong enough to beat Barca, and Juvy with no Dybala going to be hard pressed to overcome a 3-0 deficit (which is 3 away goals for Real). Can pretty much rubber stamp another Ronaldo goal in the 2nd leg, b/c that's what he does...4-1 Juvy at the Bernabeu with no Dybala sounds like fantasy land. But, maybe early red somehow, some miracle scenario...never say never.

Assuming normal results, Bayern/Sevilla only tie with any drama left.

Was on the slopes at Mammoth, could barely get the game on my phone when we were on the lifts. Pretty fucking stoked to say the least. I expected us to win at Anfield but to shut out ManC, pretty much a perfect game. They didn't even have a single shot on target. Ever since VvD and Karius became starters our defense, which was already statistically pretty good, has become really good. Anything is possible but I'd be pretty amazed if we conceded 4 and even then to do so without scoring one our self unless they get some bullshit early red card like the game earlier in the season.

Bayern won 1-2 away. There's no way Sevilla isn't gonna get beaten like they owe a mobster money in Munich.

They won a CL title 5 years years ago, and another in 2001 at home. They also lost a final to Chelsea the year before they won their last one, and lost to Mourinho's Inter in 2009.

So yeah they have had some success in CL play fairly recently, but they have lost a bunch of semi finals over the past 5 years, so they havent had any real chance at winning it since Ronaldo and Messi have rampaged world football since they last won.

Liverpool destroyed city in the CL game, although fans actions once again let you down.

Hoping we dont embarrass ourselves today at city, Pogbas hair is a great start.

Quite the 2nd half fight back. Pogba was great. Hopefully something to build on.

You need help. Seriously..

Was a fun game to watch. The game really meant nothing as City will win the league and ManU will end top 4 regardless. Worked out for LFC as Pep had to throw on basically everybody that would play on Tuesday. Game should have been over at halftime and the Pogbra brace means what? More an illustration of why not a single English ref is going to the world cup, Young basically gave away two penalties that game but since he's English they let it go. The 2nd one on Aguero is the definition of reckless and it was in the box. But after watching our Derby in the morning where somehow there were more fouls but no cards what are you going to do?

I don't understand life anymore, how did Barça blow that?? I was watching the Liverpool game so I have no idea what the game was like but I would have bet the house on Roma not pulling that off.

Liverpool got lucky with that first offside goal for City, that ball clearly came off Milner so Sané couldn't be offside. Things might have been different if City goes 2-0 up in the first half. That being said, Liverpool were much better in the second half and Salah proved once again how good he is, that was a sublime finish.
