Its pretty transparent. The company was sold off to a Russian Oligarch named Viktor because the company does large cash sweep transactions. Viktor's corporate MO at Access Industries is to rarely put any working capital or maintenance capital back into the businesses he owns, often with wildly violent conflicts with both management and other stakeholders. Corporates tend to last about 4 years under his mandate, unless they are resource corporates and a foreign entity can be found to farm-in and subsequently carry Viktor to fresh billions.
Also for tax shields. Bitches love tax shields. He likely saw how much cash flow companies like Snail and Perfect World were pulling down brownfielding out old IP's and made Kaz an offer he couldn't refuse. SOE never integrated well with Sony Entertainment, Sony Playstation or Sony PC; so it wasn't much of a shock when Kaz announced his pivot towards sensor/photometery & hardware R&D something like SOE was the first thing to get canned. Not a single one of their major PC ports has ever cracked the top 10 on Vita or PS, which for a conglomerate is just begging to be downsized.
