I love Galaxy Quest. Weaver looked totally hot in that movie too.

Shatner is warming up to the internet crowd in a way that Patrick Stewart has not. While I appreciate Stewart's stance on twitter (I even avoid facebook) Shatner just had a conversation with an astronaut currently in space because of the use of twitter.

I would love to see this catch national headlines instead of the insipid kardashian breeding rituals. NASA needs funding and Star Trek needs a new show and IMO this can only lead to great things.

Just finished DS9 again, I can't believe I keep forgetting that Sisko's emissary story is based on the trials of Hercules. It's very clear at the end, especially when you think of how the show opens with the death of his wife and you throw the being a half-god into the mix.

I hate Sisko's emissary story. Fuck that metaphysical magical god shit.
When it comes to my choice of religion I agree,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jefferson_Bible. When it comes to a deep probing story into a variety of core religious beliefs I call it interesting. As I stated Sisko ultimately is analogous to Hercules which I find fascinating because usually when they need a savior they go for jesus with guns like the matrix did. Q represents the trickster god Loki, he uses his power for his own amusement, he had no real interest in Sisko. The Prophets are the eternal god who watches but only interferes through visions, they leave the orbs to guide the Bajorans and are capable of directly communicating their will but are unable to directly affect anything , they seem only to be able to work through avatars. The Changelings are representative of the pharaohs or any other ruling party that claims divinity. They are also represented as gods of order and intolerance, where they initially set out to defend themselves they wound up stepping far beyond defense and into domination. The Vorta are Angels, created to do god's bidding without question, the Jem'Hadar are demons to be sent where destruction is needed.

Then there is Dukat. Dukat is Caligula in his divinity story and Hitler in his war story, he seeks power at any cost as long as that cost is paid by others and fixates on Sisko and Deep Space Nine because of his failures there. As his mental condition worsened as he had to build an ever more elaborate fiction to justify his actions and place Sisko in the role of the villian, the only justification he has left is that he too must be divine and turns to the Pa'Wraith for power. Kai Opaka was the Jesus figure and Kai Winn Represents pretty much every Christian figurehead who sought power and not faith, but also represents the repentant sinner whom finds redemption at the end finally learning that faith sometimes requires self sacrifice.

Deep Space Nine was great because of the metaphysical shit; not in spite of it.

Holy shit, I never realized the Hercules aspect. It makes so much sense, esp if you view the Borg as the Olympian Gods, and thus, Sisko's position on the Defiant project.

If I were to equate the Borg to anything in this series it might be the hundred-handers, because they are obscure and powerful, aren't given much of a personality and only get involved very early in the story. But I wouldn't compare them to hundred-handers because they are space zombies who mindlessly consume all they see, although that isn't really true either. I still Maintain that the best way to beat the Borg would be to advance their technology so far that they would no longer have any interest in other races because they would no longer be any purpose to adding the now inferior technological and biological distinctiveness to their own.

they'd still want to conquer our planets for resources and assimilate us for our biological distinctiveness

At a certain point in technological development it would be simple easier to generate matter and reorganize it to fit your needs than to mine for it, reproduction and diversification (a strange word to use with the borg but in essence they are diversifying their genetic code) could also be handled easier than through conquest at some point. I suppose you would need to do something about the Borg queen once and for all (I don't think they killed her for good) to ensure she does not just start killing for pleasure but the Borg in general have always been pretty cool about not attacking planets they didn't deem of any value.

I just caught the end of Star Trek V <facepalm> "What does God need with a spaceship?"

I just caught the end of Star Trek V <facepalm> "What does God need with a spaceship?"
Shatner's original intent was for them to literally meet God. That idea went over like a lead balloon and we got Sybok and the imprisoned Moses Q instead. Regardless, Shatner is a terrible director and whatever script they went with would have been stillborn on the screen.

I just realized a huge missed opportunity. They had all of the back-story they needed at that point to have made the the god they found be an imprisoned and incredibly irate John De Lancie who cannot leave "time out" without a ship because he was being punished by the continuum and they had limited his powers. They could have easily cut out the Spock's brother bullshit and focused on Q being an incredible asshole for about an hour. He would have also been a good choice because it's been shown he didn't really give a damn if he killed anyone in early TNG and it would give him a motivation for bugging the humans all the time in the future. Q would of course find Kirk absolutely abhorrent and treat him with the same disdain he shows Worf but I think he might have a more civil attitude with a Vulcan but would still point out the species flaws out of habit.

The Best Of Both Worlds probably has one of the greatest endings in history(I fucking love that song). Having said that, that fucking name always makes me laugh.

Brilliant idea, all of which would have required significantly more talent in storytelling and direction than Shatner possesses.

What is most irresponsible or irrational behavior you have seen demonstrated on Star Trek that everyone just seems to shrug off?

Something that after years of watching these shows you just have to shake your head and wonder "was the captain really protecting Quark from being extradited to Bajor for trial by the very religious society who would have not taken kindly to Quarks often insinuated or out right stated tenancy to sexually exploit his Dabo girls many of whom were Bajoran, some of whom might have been forced to service the Cardassian occupying soldiers on that very station only a few years prior?" or "why does everyone continue to use clearly malfunctioning replicators? Don't they know Salt replicated incorrectly might be a face full of hot chloine death? Who in their right mind would stick their hands in a malfunctioning replicator, wouldn't they miss those if the the machine suddenly decided to recycle matter?"

let's nitpick!

About to end TNG.. just a few more eps left. We are pretty sad. Seems people recommend DS9 so we might give it a shot. Not having the TNG cast (Picard, Riker, Data) is going to kill me a little inside.
