He's a Q now. He can probably make Prometheus a good movie, too

When does TNG actually get good? I know everybody is touting the end of season 2/Season 3+ as when DS9 starts kicking ass, but I'm on a slow ass slog through TNG. I can only get through 1-2 episodes every other day or so. The stories are just so silly thus far. Riker being a badass and Stewart are the only things saving it. The chick that plays Troi is fucking godawful. Seriously one of the worst actresses ever.
Great question. TNG actually started a trope known as "growing a beard" which defines the moment in which a show goes from being relatively bad to completely badass and it's all because Riker sprouted some badass facial pubes. Seriously, before that TNG was just rehashing old TOS stories that weren't well received in the first time around as the writers struggled to find a worthy nemesis (not that Nemesis) for the crew. Ferengi would not grow their own beards until DS9 and Vulcans are boring even when they are called Romulans and Klingons were off the table because Roddenberry said so (he wanted to show progress since the first season so the Federation and Empire made nice in the interval between series until DS9, where they are alternately enemies and allies just like every other major military power in that show). It wasn't until the Borg that the show really gained a foothold, and they would cement that foothold in "Best of Both Worlds" when instead of using the omnipotent Q to throw humanity to the far reaches of space where the Borg live a single Borg cube wanders into federation space and casually destroys every ship not emblazoned with the words "Enterprise NCC-1701-D". When all is said and done the crew only won the day because the Borg acted completely out of character when they created Locutus, seriously without using Picard to exploit some bad programming the Earth would have been easily assimilated by one ship of what was the most powerful race in the universe. They would unfortunately become punching bags later in the series and in other shows, most notably Voyager where they have lost virtually all of their menace.

"Have you met her(the character's) mother yet?"
Bash Troi all you want, she deserves it, but leave her mother out of it. Not only is Lwaxana Troi responsible for some of the funniest moments in TNG she is also played by Roddenberry's widow who provided the voice for federation computers in every series until her recent death and was apparently completely cool with Roddenberry banging Uhura. She was also Dr. Mccoy's nurse in TOS. I have a suspicion that in the future "counselor" means "ships whore" as while Troi demonstrated absolutely no abilities that would account for her being stationed on the bridge she did get passed around by the rest of the crew when Riker decided he didn't need her as a backup lay.

Watched Sins of Our Fathers last night... worf is awesome- totally forgot about his bro.

Does his honor get restored? I believe it does- but that's in DS9ish time right?

Haha oh man...the TNG Ferengi. And those fucking whip weapons. The DS9 writers and Armin Shimerman's portrayal of Quark really saved the Ferengi, like it's hard to believe that their origins were so completely awful.

I also liked the Lwaxana Troi shows, well..most of them iirc. I also hadn't heard that the actress died in any event.

And the idea that Roddenberry pitched them as the TNG crew's new main villains. Just..no. Once the DS9 writers decided to make the Ferengi analogous to the perceived worst of modern day humanity, they, well, humanized them, and they actually developed pretty well.

I really don't want to answer that, but his bromance with Chancellor Martok the one eyed giant is probably the best thing DS9 did for Worf's story.

I can get the TNG Ferengi toys (complete with whip) for $10 down the street at Past Present Future and I can't fathom how I have resisted the temptation so far, Maybe if they had Marauder Mo instead.

Don't they directly reference that toy in DS9? I think Nog says something like "I always wanted a Marauder action figure with realistic whip action!"

Could it be that the Ferengi that the Picard encountered were really just a crew of actors hired to do a "reality" show that would tie in to a toy line and make a ton of money back on Ferenginar?

IIRC Galron restores Worf's family when the Enterprise exposes the Romulan connection with the two female Klingon wenches and their man boy. Same episode IIRC that data commands that ship running the tacheyon grid to detect the cloaked romulan ships running supplies.

TNG was good, its just some of the later seasons really carried some of the earlier ones that maybe didn't age so well.

Yeah he deserves a visit from Gorok for that spelling atrocity!

Worf loses his family honour yet again in the DS9 storyline which is probably what the earlier poster was thinking of. It leads to an interesting episode with his brother later on.

He doesn't get it back until the final Dominion War Arc.
