I played this a bit with a new character and then, once I got the new systems straight, played my level 45 and got to 50 in a matter of like 90 mins. Once there I realized why 45-50 was so incredibly fast : there are zero level 50 ships you can get without paying cash or having a fleet etc.

"Well played" I think to myself and browse the store to see what ship looks cool figuring I'll plunk a couple bucks down and get one. Finally pick one out and go to load up some in-game currency figuring that 2500 Zen ~ $5 or so. Nope. 2500 Zen = $25. "Twenty five bucks for a single ship?!?!" I exclaim and promptly log out.
Really? WoW charges $25 for mounts, plus $15 subs, so I don't see what the big deal is. At least you can get zen through the exchange of dilithium which you can also earn in multiple ways in game, so eventually you can get it for "free" just have to put in a couple weeks of work for it, depending on how many characters you're running. Unless you're looking for a ship that you can't get anywhere else in the game like the new andorian ships, ok buy from the store, otherwise the fleet ships have slightly better stats anyways. They have one of the better f2p models out there imho.

I dropped the money on the Defiant escort ship when i hit 50. I've liked that little ship since DS9. Nostalgia separated me from my money.

I just ran with the L40 ships, but if youhaveto get a new ship at fifty, search the exchange for "Mirror".

Yeah, the mirror ships are dirt cheap (~100,000 EC) since they're sort of a consolation prize in the lock boxes. But when it comes to purchasing ships, you have lots of options.

You have the ships in the c-store. Yes, if you want itright fucking nowyou have to lay out some cash. If you don't mind waiting, you can usually grind up 2500 zen worth of dilithium in 3-4 weeks if you play regularly (it's faster if you have multiple characters). There are also a bunch of surveys on PWE site that will reward your account with Zen by completing the surveys.

STO is a "pay what you want" kind of game. You don't have to pay for anything if you have time to play. If you don't have time to play, you can buy Zen and get what you want when you want it.

I ve used the grinding dilitium on multiple characters to unlock what I need option. I started in oct of 2012. Leveling up to 50 took less then a week once I figured out the Mirror Invasion hour = 5-7 levels in that hour. Made two officers 50 quick (max in F2P at start) Each refined 8000 dil a day. Converted two weeks worth to zen for two more Officers slots, in under a week both were 50 and all 4 grinding 8000 a day leads to two more officer slots. Now after 3 weeks I had 6 level 50 officers grinding 8000 dil a day.

So once that was done (3 weeks into playing) I can now refine 48,000 dil a day which is just under 500 zen a day at current rates. So I can get a 2500 zen ship every 5 days or so if I chose. So far I have only Bought the Vesta Bundle (5000 Zen) and Andorian Escort Bundle (5000 Zen) each bundle is 3 ships that every level 50 officer on my account can get whenever they want for free since I bought it.

If you know how to old school grind, this game is F2P for you for a few weeks tops then you can unlock all the perks you want. Granted I only actually play one or two of my officers a day I just flop to each one every 4 hours or so to do a contraband duty officer mission that nets 2000 dil every 4 hours, plus normal duty officer missions to get the 8000 on the ones I am not fooling with that day. Sitting on ruffly 200,000 - 400,000 refined dil atm on each of my six officers waiting for prices to dip on dil to zen conversion so I can stockpile up for the Romulan stuff next month.

I'm actually enjoying this. I'm not sure how much play value I'll get at max level, but right now, it's fun.

hrmmm... Rerolled The Next Generation might be a good fleet name on a few levels. Nobody has messaged me to setup a fleet though. Need 5.

Max level becomes a resource grind. You'll mostly be running special task force (STF) missions, fleet missions (if you're in a fleet) and grinding daily missions (PvE and PvP). It's actually a benefit to keep your number of alts low, since there's the grind as soon as you hit max level. I have like 10 characters, since there used to be not much to do at level 50 I ended up rolling alts. Now they've added a bunch of long advancement grinds and I'm down to playing 2-3 characters semi-regularly.

As for starting a fleet, I'd suggest against it unless you're actually planning on sticking with the game. Fleet starbases are a massive undertaking that will take months (or years if you're in a fleet with no active players). You'd be better off joining an existing fleet that's recruiting since they will have a mostly completed starbase, with some having a T5 facility available (Com station, Fleet Shipyard, Industrial Fabricator).

Your best bet would be to join an fairly large population (50+ active players) fleet that's recruiting. Buy what you want for your characters over the span of a few weeks, then leave that fleet to form your own.

Logged in on my lvl 17 and I have no idea wtf I was doing, so I'm gonna just start over. Happens with every MMO. Log in, no idea what the fuck all this shit is, proceed to try and figure it out then camp 20 minutes later.

Check the calendar events once you reach level 10. Ignore everything else while your levelling except for the Mirror Universe invasion. It will become an option to queue for at the right time and its double xp + early game fun. Its available for an hour and my advice is to queue up for it as fast as you can during that power hour. My record is 11 runs i think, and that was with an experienced group mass pulling / aoeing.

Mirror universe is fun. I"m a sucker for the red alerts for the borg encounters too.
I'm a sucker for Borg in general though.

Donno if it's been asked - how large is the DL and installation? Thinking of getting my TNG fix, but don't want another 'The Secret World'-ish DL monster for a little single player enjoyment. What's the word on the street, Trekkies?

Think it took an hour for me, through Steam. There's also some streaming stuff in-game (first time in a system, for instance), but it happens once per instance. Not unreasonable.

The full game is like 12-15 gigs. It seems to install really fast from Steam.

If you're looking for fast ways to level up, the Mirror Event and Borg Red Alerts are the way to go. Mirror Event happens about every 10 hours, and you can usually get 4-5 runs finished in an hour depending on your groupmate's abilities.

The Borg Red Alerts happen in each sector block about once an hour, and each has a daily mission attached to them for 10 Omega Marks and 480 dilithium. The thing is, in some cases the Borg RA bugs out and you'll warp into an empty instance. Solution? Click the top of your minimap (where it says what sector/zone you're in) and change instance to one that has less than 5 people in it. This will usually drop you in a fresh instance, but it's good to do this if you're hunting exp because you get like 5x exp while in the RA maps.

Deep Space Encounters (those enemy ships and red clouds around sector space) are probably your next best bet for exp, since you can camp out inside one of those and not leave until you feel like it.

As for gear, don't waste your time worrying much about it. The game will likely drop everything you'll need. Use what works until you get to max level. Don't waste a lot of money on small upgrades, since you'll be wanting to replace it with reputation gear when you hit level 50.
