Great government Cali. Meanwhile Florida is reducing their homeless population while having consistently the lowest COVID rates of any large state (except that one hiccup last September), the highest happiness index, and is generally killing it while everyone in the north shits all over their governor for some reason.

For anyone still wasting time on this turd sandwich, I recommend rewatching S4-S7 of Deep Space Nine. That's what I'm doing. It's still brilliant, and you get the whole Dominion conflict in that grouping. DS9 also sports lots of progressive ideology, but it does so without trashing or belittling anyone. The characters actually behave like adults. Sisko is a great captain with a ton of emotional range.

After I finish this, I think I'm gonna watch Enterprise S1-S4 and give that show another chance. In the past I only saw the first 3 seasons of DS9 and only sporadic bits of Enterprise. I think it deserves another shot. As I understand it S3 and S4 are the really solid and worthwhile seasons there, but I'll slog through the first two for Bakula.

The amazing thing about Trek was always the integration of alien races in to the storylines. We learned about Klingons, their strict code of honour (and how they could justify getting around it), what they ate, how they talked, their beliefs around the afterlife, mating rituals, etc. We actually gave a shit about them.

Picard basically everyone is human on a human planet talking about human problems. Sure Q is an alien, same with the Borg Queen, and the watcher is a Romulan but they're so unalien looking and they talk like humans no-one would know or care.

Where the Borg are concerned, they've taken some of the most iconic villains in sci-fi and reduced them to a plot from Species.

I think it was the RLM review of Episode 3 and 4, but they made a comment about "where are all the Klingons?" I don't and haven't watched Picard but do remember the strange Klingons at the start of Discovery (after lasting 3 episodes and giving up on that one). So are there no Klingons in Picard?

I would hope that Michael Dorn has enough respect and love for his character that he would tell them to pound sand when asked to play some Nu-klingon Worf, but it's probably more about no one wanting to put in (pay for) the hours in the makeup chair.

The Kurtzman universe Klingons all caught a plague when Picard went back in time. It wasn't deadly, but it turned them all tarded...

Episode was kind of all over. Assimilated special ops suddenly become Star Wars stormtroopers with aim. Hologram Romulan that somehow has memories of the real guy. Picard flashback with still no clear point on the plot besides character development

I do like how Juratti basically called out the Queen that for such an advanced/ perfect entity, they always lose and tried to convince her of an alternative path by making it still sound Borgish

LOL at the scene where the two chix are running through a field of Borg sharpshooters and dodging all their shots while killing them all with knives.

Joe put it best here, "the men in this show are all portrayed as fucking useless"

Haven't watched a single episode of this dreck after season one, but following the car crash via RLM and AJ has been something.

Joe IS a lefty, but he's constantly saying that they overreach and go too far with things and turn off people that could be allies, stuff like that.

So basically he's me in 2018. Give it a couple years and he'll be just as pissed-off, just need the cancel mob to go after him about something innocuous and dumb and it'll be that last push he needs.

I'm also proof that someone can have a lot of progressive values and also be red-pilled as fuck, and I see Joe rapidly going the same route.

It's called most moderate people, which make up the vast majority of the population despite what the loudest 1% on the internet would have you believe. I think most far left people are just as fucking stupid as the far right.

Hispanics, by and large, are like most immigrants - morally conservative (at least, to whatever beliefs they had back in the old country), but siding with Democrats for 'wealth sharing' while they get established.

The more they get established, the less they're inclined to buy into the rest of the modern Democratic agenda (Homosexual /Transgender / Whatever Pandering, Black Pandering, Socialism / Communism, etc.) just for the economic safety net.

Given the current tire-fire that is the Biden administration, Republicans _should_ be digging up every moderate-right Hispanic candidate they can come up with, rather than stick with Trump (who has already lost once and can only be in office for one more term), but this is the 21st century - everyone's an idiot.

but the borg don't think they are perfect... thats the entire POINT of assimilation. "we will take your uniqueness and add it to ourselves to make ourselves better"

Having spent a lot of time around them, I'm pretty sure that people on the far left truly believe that 50-60% of the country thinks like them, when in actuality it's more like 5-10% and very few of them are over the age of 30 (unless they have an entrenched position in the system that functions as an echo chamber, like a lot of teachers, city council folk, or yes, TV writers).

A huge portion of the country (the part that decides elections) is more like me, in the middle and trying to have some balance and nuance. We don't want either ideology to be too prevalent, or either party to get too much power. And nowayears it seems to be the dems who are overreaching and pushing incessantly to have more power over free speech, the arena of ideas, and government control over the voting mechanism. They accused Trump of many authoritarian things, most of which have turned out to be what they themselves were after since then, in what can only be described as a massive wall of projection.

I agree, republicans should be finding and setting up their next major candidate (and it should be Ron DeSantis, despite his being Italian rather than Hispanic).

Ron DeSantis/Tim Scott would be a winning ticket, or Ron DeSantis/Francis Suarez. Either of those would be a 55-45 level drubbing in the 2024 popular vote, and a 1988 Bush Sr level electoral vote count (I don't think we can get back to Reagan 1984 numbers in a hyperpartisan climate).

Instead they're hitching their wagon to Trump again. I like Trump, but he has so much negative baggage in the public consciousness that he's an easy target, and despite his EXTREMELY high popularity among the 40% who like him, even this tremendously weak current administration might be able to squeak past him in a rematch.

I even think he deserves another shot to end his term(s) on a better note than the awful one his first one ended on. But not only would that make 2024 a tougher win, but if he did win it'd make 2028 a tougher win because there'd be no incumbent advantage and the candidate would need to do the whole 2008 McCain "distance yourself from previous guy" song and dance.

I should probably move this to the Politics thread, though quite frankly that thread moves too fast for me to keep up with it (which is a good thing).

I mean sure.. they are space communists. "your uniqueness will be added to our collective" is, "diversity is our strength". The needs of the many outweighs the needs of the few. thats EXPRESSLY what the Borg are. joining a collective, giving up your individual will, for the community good.

Do these creators even understand that? almost certainly not.

The Borg is the only way Communism works. A hivemind. Communism in reality fails instantly, as its requires a bureaucracy to operate. you hand over all your power to the greater good. ok. But there needs to be some system to manage and coordinate what that greater public good is. And, since in reality we are not a hivemind, or psychic in order to instantly communicate this with each other. we need bureaucracy. that bureaucracy is managed by human beings. human beings are fallible. they are biased, greedy, and not omniscient. And, you handed over ALL your power to those people in charge of the bureaucracy. So, when that bureaucrat becomes corrupt, or incompetent instantly, as they always do. you have no means to oust them. they control all the systems of power. The only means of advancement in that system is nepotism or expressly illicit corruption. mobsters.
The hivemind lets it work without corruption. however, its still a 51% tyranny of the majority. Which suffers from not allowing individuals pursue ideas and methods taboo to that majority.
