My wife is huge on intrapersonal relationships and those stories, regardless of genre. So she latched onto Riker and Troi, Solo and Leia, The Doctor and "companion" (Matt Smith, David Tennant, Bad Wolf, Clara), Apollo and Starbuck... Alternatively, Aragorn and Arwen weren't really explored too heavily, mostly presented in a surreal manner, so she didn't keep to Lord of the Rings. She of course loves Gollum, and Legolas when she was younger. She enjoys the conceptual, intellectual aspects of things presented in say Star Trek TNG, but it's mostly secondary and she doesn't really hold strong memories of those things.
She willingly and happily watched the original trilogy over three days, and we finished out Return of the Jedi as we were walking out of the house to go watch The Force Awakens. Which, was visually pretty remarkable, but when you compare it directly to the original trilogy, nothing fucking happens, or what does is stupid or shits all over it. Solo being a putz then getting pointlessly murdered.... womp womp. Character assassination of Solo. Then they assassinated Skywalker in the next. Wife could basically take or leave The Force Awakens, but obviously liked BB8.
