Rey's theme is memorable but kinda---weak I dunno. It sounds like something from a JRPG:

It's maybe too delicate? Definitely felt meh in the movie by itself, but when her melody was merged with the main theme during the duel it wasn't bad. The version of it at the end was pretty good too.
That's the mark of a good piece, though. It can blend/transition with other themes and scale to a crescendo and back down and works with heavy percussion as well as a single instrument.

It's not very Star Wars sounding, but I like it. Has a bit of a Nutcracker thing going on. A bit of mystery

I'm convinced that emperor gollum is an illusion within an illusion (inception!), and that the 'real' one will be a returning villain from the previous films.
Other than that my wife is convinced rey is han and leia's 2nd kid (twins!), and I am convinced she is gollum's.

Max Landis is getting a bunch of backlash because he called Rey a Mary Sue. Now my tweeter feed is full of random media critics and internet personalities telling everyone that if you don't love Rey and the movie then they're sexist and probably racist too. I actually got blocked by a few people because I argued that Rey was more of a Mary Sue than Luke Skywalker or Harry Potter. I wonder how long before the internet articles start being uploading denouncing anyone who doesn't love the movie as Hitler loving Nazis.
It was 'rough' enough to not be taken aback by it throughout the movie and honestly, I do see the backstory working to her favor. She knows how to fight with a staff weapon very well (helps her during saber fight), knows about parts (helps her fix things), knows about ships in a general sense and very detailed mechanically (helps her get a hang of flying them, she already knows the controls). The only really oddball things were the force hijinks IMO. The saber pull I get, it's just raw desire/force/whatever. The force suggestion... I mean maybe she thinks she can reverse what Ren was trying on her? The mind bullshit? I dunno, together it does seem like a lot for her to just happen upon.

OK if that leak from the novelization is legit and Kylo actually does say "it IS you!" during their duel I think the masked voice that's tells little Rey "Quiet Girl" on Jaku might actually he Kylo Ren himself!

Look,at 0:31 of that visionRey is about to be attacked by one of the people that killed off the last of Luke's Jedi.... but he gets killed by Kylo Ren before he could hit Rey:

UGVgGQw.jpg

Then Rey slips to the mud and we pan out to see the Knights of Ren in the rain before Kylo steps toward her. The NEXT scene is the Rey being left on Jaku crying "noooo come back" and the masked voice saying "quiet girl" sounds earily like some dude wearing some kind of vader mask.

If the novel snippet is legit, then Kylo just recognizes the girl he spared that night as Rey. Why did he spare her? Maybe she IS his cousin.
The voice that says "quiet girl" is definitely Max von Sydow's character.

Yeah that's what I thought earlier. Definitely sounds more like Max von Sydow wearing an armored helmet than Kylo Ren with his mask. Either way it does seem like Kylo saves her and sends her to Jakku. Their banter at the beginning even supports that familiarity.

I'm thinking there's a ton of minor shit in an extended edition, little 1-2 min expository dialogue or shots that got cut to keep time down in editing that fill in a ton of details.

It sounds like a lot of the disappointment is stemming from the fact that folks either didn't KNOW or FORGOT that Disney hired Abrams to make a soft-reboot for Star Wars after the impressive job he did rebooting Star Trek.

As with the star-trek reboot, he even had a character from the old continuity step in and play the hand-off to the next generation of the franchise---except Spock didn't die like Han does.

If you came in with the expectation that this was intended to be Disney "clearing the slate" and inaugurating their stewardship of the franchise, you wouldn't have been weirded out by the astonishing similarities with ANH in tone and structure.
In other words, if you're willing to settle for a mediocre movie, it was pretty good.

Abrams said 20-30 mins were cut from the theatrical release, and it really shows in the early pacing of the movie. I suspect a lot of cut scenes must've been from the TIE fighter crash and probably a lot of stuff from Maz Kanata's cantina/palace though, since those felt pared down to almost nothing.

Maybe a few are more exposition shots, but I can't help but thinking most those cut scenes were probably load-bearing stuff that really gimped the pacing when they dropped them. It feels like a short 2 hours 30 mins as is.

No. It was a good movie HOWEVER a lot of fans have been dying to know about the galaxy not just a few dudes. Despite the huge POS the prequels were, they give another dimension to the greater understanding of the galaxy. The reboot is a little too complete and the fan service should have been backstory for the last 30 years since Jedi not dumb chess board things. Anyway, still minor quibbles, it was a solid movie.

Not going to lie, she is a bit so far. She lacks any real flaws right now to give her more depth. We'll see if that changes with the sequels. From my stand point, Finn is the best character right now.

I just got back from seeing it, totally loved it.

I love the new characters, Rey, Kylo, Finn, Maz, and Poe. All excellent casting and solid performance.

The story was pretty good, I'm hoping it will get better with episode 8 that fill some of the stuff and hopefully explains some of the things that were a bit weak in the story.

I don't really have an issue with the power level of Kylo against Finn and Rey at the end...as people as said he was injured and more importantly totally unhinge and unfocused.

The final shot of Luke, damn he said nothing, did nothing and it was more powerful and emotional than anything in the prequels.

While not perfect, I think it does its job of bringing back Star Wars...I think most people even those who didn't appreciate it as much probably want to see the next one to have a few question answered.

For me, it's right up there with ESB and ANH, which were above RotJ which was above of the prequels.

Going to see it again next weekend, hopefully catch a few things I missed.

I know there was a lot of Starkiller hate. After a nice thought about it during a poop, I don't think its that bad at all despite the whole "yawn, not another deathstar plot." I pray they don't try to continue more deathstar's but it made sense for this film. It helped lay out a playing field, then leveling it evenly for both sides. First Order knocks out all of the Resistance's resources, which is stated at least twice? and then the Resistance knocks out the entire First Orders base of operations. Now if they have another base that is relatively the same, i'll be thoroughly disappointed. With the 30 year gap, despite Starkiller being an asston of work, helps kinda build a "where are they now" vibe. I kinda enjoyed the 'engineering' behind Starkiller, and the way they took it down. I thought it was slightly weird that one major shot turned into 4 shots though but it drove the point of their power. The politics were very subtle in TFA, but I feel that neither the Resistance or First Order are much in the politics of the universe now, kinda like whats going on in the middle east. It's significant, but not to the degree of a galactic war. Hopefully it'll pan out better over 8 and 9.

With the clone/highly trained soldiers comments, I hope the next films will dive more into Hux and Phasma on how they obtain or train soldiers to repopulate their army. While the Resistance scrambles around the political field and such with the senate.

I curious to know if the people who are down on this movie, did you guys grow up with the originals? I did and everyone I know who did thinks pretty much the same thing. While not the 'greatest movie ever', it sure as hell felt like a Star Wars movie, certainly one that belongs with the original trilogy of movies. Unlike the prequels which left a bad taste in the mouth every single time you walked out of the theater. I can't even quantify the disappointment that was TPM, I don't care how much clapping there was when Darth Maul died.
It felt like a JJ abram's version of a Star Wars movie. Obviously he had some directives from Disney but it seemed like a waste to bring in the writer from ESB to write this film only to have JJ abrams completely rewrite the entire thing, and by "rewrite" I mean take the script from ANH and replace Obi-wan with "Han", Luke with "rey", Han with "Finn", and call it a day. Like I said, it's better than the prequels but worse than any of the OT. it's a solid 4.5/10 where i'd rank jedi at 6/10. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't good. It was "Meh". Maybe if you like JJ abram's films you give it an extra point but that still just makes it a mediocre 5.5-6/10.

Any thoughts to the VO from the first released trailer not being in the movie? Luke clearly is talking to someone in it and talks about the "force being strong in my family". No Way they would have that and then have it amount to nothing so I will assume there will be another skywalker besides Kylo.

Also missing from that trailer is Maz handing leia the lightsaber.

It made for a great trailer, that's all. Maybe the Maz scene ends up in the bluray but between now and that bluray's release the theatrical release is all that really matters.

There's supposedly more in the novelization and the companion anthology book tho.

Kinda. There is an interview where he mentions he re-recorded parts of it for the trailer, and they actually merged it with parts of his ROTJ, even still in ROTJ he never says "my sister has it,you have that power to"
