Just within the context of the movie Kylo telling her she's the daughter of junkies who sold her off, and her believing him, isn't definitive proof of that being who her parents are. He's wanting her to forget about her past so he would naturally tell her something she'd happily put in her rear view and preferably with some resentment attached. That doesn't mean it's a lie, just that it's certainly plausible for it to be.

In the context of things Rian Johnson has said since the release he was trying to take the franchise beyond the Skywalkers so that's why it unfolded like it did. He's also thrown out the "from a certain point of view" line when talking about it and has said he tried to go about it in a way that would hand as much creative room to the next director as he was given. So if Abrams or Lucasfilm wants to backtrack on it he's left them the room to do so.

But no, she's not the chosen one.

You defended TFA and Rogue One pretty relentlessly too.

I'm quite sure JJ is gonna come back for 9 and throw a bunch of curveballs about a lot of this shit and be like "hurr you weren't expecting everything you hated to become things you love, now wash my balls nerds!"

That is light at the end of the tunnel only if Rian's trilogy involves none of these characters.

Was Rian's trilogy confirmed to be a stand alone? If not then JJ is going to get cucked into whatever story Lucas Film has planned for those 3 movies. Even if not overt, the influence will be there.

But as I said, Rian got a lot of freedom in TLJ. I think JJ will pressure them to give him the same freedom in Episode 9. With TFA he was sweating bullets on stage at the prospect of ruining the entire IP-- with Episode 9, its really going to be a what-now-bitches moment for him.

Do you honestly think JJ Abrams can write a coherent, full story? The guy is an idea man. He is not a storyteller. His stories fucking suck. They start off interesting and then nothing ever happens until they just hamfist some shitty ending onto it (if he even sticks around to actually write the ending himself).

He's Hollywood's version of "And then I found 20 dollars". He should be tasked with coming up with an idea and starting to flesh it out and then handing the reigns off to someone who can actually tell a full story.

Episode IX - Damage Control

And no, JJ is a fucking hack that ruined Star Trek and then shit on Star Wars as well. He'll have some terrible idea like a Starkiller base that will ruin the next film as well. I do not doubt he'll try to throw some change ups into what he was left with though, because he's been left with a plate of shit and who wants that?

She saw her parents in the Mirror of Erised and Kylo said "search your feelings you know it to be true" and the director has confirmed it on twitter.
Does she? Doesn't she just see herself? As Royal also mentioned, the way and timing in which Kylo delivers it also leans to him not telling the truth.

You defended TFA and Rogue One pretty relentlessly too.

I'm not sure what you see there that constitutes a defense of this movie. It's an interpretation of a particular scene. I didn't say it was either a good or bad narrative choice. But I'll do that now. I said a long time ago when it was a regular discussion in the TFA thread that I didn't really care who Rey's parents were but I'd rather her be a nobody than any of the popular theories that were going around at the time (a Skywalker, a Kenobi, a Palpatine, Chosen One 2.0). So on that count it was a good one as far as I'm concerned, if it proves to be true by the end.

And you don't remember my criticisms of Rogue One then. I know some here can't wrap their heads around the notion of appreciating something while still being able to acknowledge and dissect it flaws.

The Last Jedi

Domestic Total as of Dec. 20, 2017: $278,710,009

Domestic:
$278,710,009 48.6%
+ Foreign: $295,000,000 51.4%
= Worldwide: $573,710,009

Countries comprising that foreign opener. UK 3rd largest in history, as well as being the 3rd largest opening weekend worldwide. 3 3 and 3 is the tale of the tape for this blockbuster.

  • UK - $36.7 M (3rd largest ever)
  • Germany - $23.6 M (2nd largest ever)
  • France - $18.1 M
  • Australia - $15.9 M (2nd largest ever)
  • Japan - $14.4 M
  • Russia - $8.5 M
  • Spain - $8.3 M
  • Brazil - $7.2 M
  • Italy - $7.0 M
  • Mexico - $7.0 M
  • Sweden - $6.0 M (2nd largest ever)
  • Korea - $5.1 M
Opening day demographics show the film played to an audience that was 58% male vs. 43% female and of that audience 37% was 25 years old or under. Opening day audiences gave the film an "A" CinemaScore, matching the score for Force Awakens. However, there may be a small glitch in the Force as many are pointing to the RottenTomatoes audience score for Last Jedi, which is currently 56% vs. a 93% score from critics. It is the largest audience-to-critic divide for films in the Star Wars franchise on the site. Additionally, IMDb is showing a down tick in user ratings over opening release weekend when compared to user ratings for Force Awakens (8.8/10) and Rogue One (8.3/10) on the Sunday following release with Last Jedi currently holding a 8/10 rating. Just how significant an effect this data has on the film may be difficult to assess given the sheer size of its grosses, but it's definitely worth noting.

Reviews are sliding hard and fast. The film still remains the 3rd largest weekend in cinema history.

37% was 25 years old or under.

Confirming the interest in these movies is mostly from the younger half of millennials, but mainly Generation Z.

Nothing interesting here. I like her but they haven't shown enough struggle in her life to make her be a compelling protagonist without destiny being involved - everything she does works. She'd be ruling the galaxy if she said the words "yes Kylo let's join forces but let the rebels go".

Wow, that mirror had a name? I was too busy looking down at my popcorn wondering where the fuck it all went wrong to notice.

Oh my god, I still can't believe I went out to see that piece of shit film. I think I have PTSD from that film, 'cause right now I'm like a soldier with a thousand yard stare.

The A CInemascore matters more than shit like user ratings on RT or Metacritic. Like you pointed out, these movies aren't really for our generation any longer. We'll be vocal and give shit ratings online but the mass audience will eat that shit up. There have been slightly higher Mon/Tues/Wed drops compared to TFA and even RO but I don't know that's significant or even matters if it is. 750M vs 800M is still a gigantic hit.

The only reason that it's getting that big of a boost in the numbers is because TFA was a passable version. Fuck, I even thought it was okay. The true test is the next film and seeing who directs and if they have to write their own script. I'm not going to see the next film, especially on the opening weekend.

Knowing how stupid starwars is for symbolism and shit... callbacks to silly things that starwars takes seriously but no one else does...like the hand thing.

So...here is a dumb theory...from me

Darth maul is canon sliced in half and falling down a huuugggeee pit only to live and get robot spider legs, then normal legs.

Hands getting lopped off is a big symbol also.

Leah exploded and tossed into space - been exposed to open space and - a okay!

So if they where just going to kill Snoke off ezpz, yet they made a point for him not to just be sliced in half...but they also had him get a hand sliced off also...

So, we also know that they love to re-use EU ideas in different forms- so Palpatine jumping bodies...

Snoke ain't gone folks.

Finally saw this today and I have to say it didn't feel like Star Wars at all. I enjoyed Rogue One and The Force Awakens but this was not good.

The only two parts that wow'd me was the ship ramming at light speed and the part with Luke taking all those blaster shots, then it turns out it wasn't even him which really took away from it. It felt they were still trying to establish the characters, you know, something that should have been done in the first film.

Also, how do you let the main villain go down like a bitch with no theatrical bad ass fight?

So 35% were under 25 on opening weekend. How much does that demographic spread represent the early movie goers instead of the star wars demographic? It also shows 65% were over age 25 so it shows actually the exact opposite of what your claiming.
