The maps are pretty boring, high level players tend to cream themselves over slightly different tower/ramp/gras placement but I don't think that normal people care much for that and want actual different features.

So when for the past 1 and 1/2 years of WoL when every tournament used the same map pools, none of you guys gave a shit, yet now, when every tournament is picking up new maps and giving us unique stuff you're bitching?

Island maps for competitive play would be god awful. Having an island base on a map isn't bad assuming it's put in correctly. For instance, I didn't mind when Metropolis had the island bases. Or...shit there was an ESV map (the name escapes me atm) that used island bases which were done well. As Zaphid said, there are plenty of good island maps out there. Or hell, go draw out a "good" island map in MSpaint and I'll make it look glorious in the sc2 editor.

If today's proleague taught me anything, then it's that JvZ is still a very much real thing

There was a 1v1 map I liked in WoL... scrap station or something? Space Platform map which had two close main bases with an island inbetween, then a long ground route between the two with destructable rocks to make it shorter. Don't think it's there anymore?

I liked it because it slowed down rushes and gave you a bit more time to think, the flip side being that air rushes were better.

Scrap Station

Probably fun to play for casual people, but I think it's the most abusable map after Steppes of War. Wide ramp, close air distance, natural far away, ledge for proxy buildings, distant gold for hidden expansions. The map has it all

For the last year and a half I took off from SC2.

"The races are balanced against each other on certain types of maps" -> make all the maps this way.

It's fine I guess but after 200 games, it gets a little stale.

You realize what you are asking for ? That's like making chess playable and balanced on monopoly board. Not even BW was like this.

You say I'm asking for chess on a monopoly board but I'm not.

You realize sc2 has things like nydus, drop ships, air units etc. Things that all SHOULD work as balanced between the races on an island game, but they don't.

What DOES work is checkers on a chess board right now. Deathball vs deathball every game on maps that might as well be the same thing.

I blame lack of micro oriented units and general herp derpery being shoved into everything gameplay related these days as a "quality of life feature".

But please, go on to tell us how the campaign was completely devoid of any this.

I did like scrap station a lot.

Do you even know what micro oriented unit means ?

First you whine that the game doesn't get changed every 2 weeks, then you whine that the game doesn't work on stupid maps, then you confess that you like scrap station. So, I guess the next time you will say that the game should totally have 4th race and hero units ?

Well pal, I like the game and I think it works on a competitive level. I don't think any of it is really a whine. There's areas where I think the game could improve. Sorry if I offended anyone!

Chris here smells a bit of what the Rock is cookin at least.

Blizzard Buys IGN Pro League

Blizzard has purchased the IGN Pro League. IPL technology and assets are now owned by Blizzard, and existing members of IPL's staff will help form a new team in San Francisco "whose primary focus will be on creating high-quality web and mobile content in support of Blizzard games."

"This new team will help us to further develop the rich media experiences that extend the fun and engagement of our games online," said Blizzard executive vice president of publishing Itzik Ben-Bassat. "This is a team of passionate gamers with a proven track record, and we're looking forward to now leveraging their expertise and technology to support a variety of online efforts."

Other IPL staff members will join Blizzard's existing eSports team. Following today's news, IGN will partner with multiple eSports organizations to cover their events in the future rather than focusing on a few key titles.
And they will make them cast WoW arenas !

I think most everyone saw this coming. Not only because there were rumors of it when IPL folded but now Blizzard is in charge of a bunch of WCS tournaments to run so they needed a crew and IPL is known for having flawless production. Nothing but good news about this.

I wonder how much longer we'll endure Terrans having mines burrowed at their wall for no reason and having them get cooled down by 1 ling running into the wall. It seems pretty obvious to me to just hotkey those units and leave them unburrowed behind the wall on bane/roach defense instead of killing a lone ling.

Where? I've been watching korean VoDs of proleague exclusively

It was one of those things "nobody knows" until they are announced, just like the WCS announcement. I wonder how NASL will survive now though, probably Dota 2 league, but even that market is getting crowded and you have to broadcast with EU audience in mind. WCS NA will probably have the worst casters now though, the only voice I can remember is Kevin Knocke, MLG's casting is like background noise and none of the other IPL guys stands out, though I wasn't exactly keeping up with their casts. EU has Apollo, Kaelaris, Adebisi, even 2GD can provide good color.

I think the typical co-caster for Kevin was Doa. Since he is in KR now who knows but I'm assuming for WCS NA they'll put together a lineup similar to what MLG has with Axeltoss, Day, Axlav and Incontrol.

The reason creative maps and islands can't work in the competitive scene is primarily because of Terran. The whole ladder map pool had to be tweaked in the first year because they have units and abilities that can abuse terrain too much. Maps like Kulas Ravine, Incineration Zone, Lost Temple, Delta Quadrant, and Shakuras Plateau w/ the destructible rocks had to be removed or completely revamped because of medivacs, thors, siege tanks, and reapers. Basically anything that requires you to have a flying unit to access or get past (ledge, island, destructable rocks), or allows sieging from an obscure place, will favor Terran almost every time because medivacs and flying buildings are what the race is built around.
