Yeah outside of government work, how many people his age will ever see a pension, even a bad one? I guess he can work government as a civilian eventually too maybe.
So I got out of the Marines at 13 years and now have almost 4 years of government service. Once I hit 20 and paying a small percentage of my 13 years I will have a government pension.

Not suggesting everyone get out of the military before 20 years but if you do there are ways to not let it go to waste.

assuming he has no background check issues he should go intel, if he's gonna be enlisted anything else is a literal waste of time in comparison

Also always have the option of joining the reserves after your active time. Having some active time accumulates a lot of points toward reserves retirement.

I tried to push intel, he was able to call for the holiday today and said he's not excited about the job assignment but realizes he can try for something different eventually.

He had also said before about going reserves after active while he works on finishing degree(s). Said he had army friends who've done that and it sounded like a good plan to him.

Reserves is pretty awesome. Eventually getting retirement benefits while working a weekend a month and 2 weeks of annual training is good shit. The nature of things now though he'd likely get activated at some point, it's rare for people to go over 10 years without being activated at some point, much different now than it was back in like the 80s and 90s.

I'd be concerned with a RIF. I remember back in the early 90's people being Riffed left and right even with a number of years of service.

We are going through a "mock" RIF right now on a per unit basis and people have been offered bonuses to retire early.

Without some kind of conflict the DoD is going to see a large decline from what it is today. The influx of personnel for war efforts is not sustainable long term.

He's going into 1c711, which is airfield management.

I'm a 1C, these are the Command and Control jobs basically. I'm a 1C3 (Command and Control Operations Specialist) but have fairly frequent contact with Airfield Management. On this deployment atm I actually work directly with them in the same tent; we're the only two in here on our night shifts so I got to know them all pretty well. All are younger Airmen at various bases. Some like it, some don't. Pretty much the case with any job. If he happens to go to RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall, or Spangdahlem AB, let me know since I'll personally know some people he would be working with!

He's halfway through basic and slotted already, too late for that besides trying to retrain at 3 or 5 years (depending on enlistment length).

Either way, good luck to him! If he's halfway through Basic he's basically done and just following routine now. He will be going to Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS for his tech school. Only six weeks long, same place and length as mine. I had a fucking AMAZING time there. If you're of age, it's nothing but fun nightlife and partying, much like college. Can rent a car and drive to New Orleans in a couple hours, definitely worth the trip if you get a few people together and make a weekend of it. Just don't get retarded drunk, NEVER drink and drive, and don't bring anything/go anywhere you aren't supposed to. If he is under age, don't touch or go anywhere near liquor. Show up on time to everything and do your work, you will fly through. Pass that on :p

As for staying in 20...take it 4 years at a time. This isn't for everybody. I'm 1 year out from separation and can't wait to be done.

If you intend to do a full 20 you can't reenlist after like 10 years or whatever. You Volunteer Indefinitely. Its a little unfortunate because of the sweet reenlistment deals you can get.
