This will be for a wife who will basically watch videos, read email and web pages and play a few tablet games. I don't really think she needs anything crazy, but i don't want to cheap out either. What would you suggest in the $300 range? Also it needs a clipon keyboard, that seems to be a selling feature for some reason. At that price range, you might want to go with something else,
You are screwed regardless. 16 gb on a non retina display pretty much sucks, and RT isn't the best of the Surface tech

Pretty sure the 10" only comes in black. On a serious note, is it just me or is 10" too big and 7 not big enough? I went with the Galaxy note 8 when purchasing a new tablet and its "just right".Of course women want 10" anything less than that is just not big enough.
Even if you can get it, you might want to wait. Well, if you don't even use the Google keyboard, you could uninstall it. If it's installed as a system app and you're not rooted, you can just disable it. That should stop it from requesting updates.Anyone know how to prevent the Play store from "updating" certain apps? For instance, the google keyboard, which I don't even use, wants to "update" the Hindi input app. It's not an update, that's a new install. I don't want it, and now it's preventing me from updating everything else I want with the convenient "update all". Still, it's just a keyboard app.
But with 4.4, I guess they included the ability to print from a tablet(yay?). So now the play store wants to "update" an HP printer service app. That'll be the day I ever allow an HP printer app on my tablet or phone.
These apps are actually installed on the device. You just don't see them in the PlayStore until they get an update. So no, that's not a new install.Anyone know how to prevent the Play store from "updating" certain apps? Right. We have a gaming laptop, gaming desktop, PS3, PS4, Wii, Xbox360, as well as PS2, PS1, Gamecube, N64, SNES, NES.. etc.Surface RT would probably be fine for anyone that just wants tablet functionality with a keyboard. All of us tech nerds here love the Pro because we could actually game on it as well, but I'd bet thats pretty much a non-factor to your wife. Doubt she'll be wanting to play Starcraft 2 on her device.
Should look at the Dell Venue line. Full version of Surface and price is still decent.Took the wife out tonight. Pretty much confirmed what I originally thought, she wanted exactly the opposite of what I would want (which is ok, really). She immediately hated the Nexus 7 - she thought it felt like a large cellphone, also it was in demo mode which apparently runs slow as shit; she hated it. She liked the iPad mini because it felt like her phone. She loved the Surface and Surface RT. Staples is actually doing a deal on black friday where it's $249 for the surface and comes with a type pad for free; we might do that. I didn't really want the Surface RT after reading about how limited it is, but since it's for her I can't complain. She feels comfortable in the Windows setting and I could tell it was the one she really liked. I hope I'm not making a shitty purchase. In the end it's only $249 so I'm not too worried, just hope it lasts her a little while.
