I do most of my exploring on my Thalor Bulwark. While not an offensive powerhouse by any means, the fact that I'm damn near invulnerable is pretty nice, can take on a lot of bosses that simply cannot hit me and Thalor get a lot of innate resists. Got lucky and had a lone alchemist escort right off the bat so learned the gem xmute thing and made bank. Stacked life regen as much as I could as well so now I regenerate like 1/5th my life per turn.
yeah. my summoner died. so I just started a Thalor Wyrmic.
Basically a dragonknight.
I wasn't really expecting just how tanky she would be. Very point heavy. both stat and talents.
skills scale with str/will primarily. which is fairly tough early. as getting up to 38 will and 38str asap is hard. And also means you are skipping dex/con, for this melee character. will is mostly for unlocking skills and not actually scaling them as much, so you can focus on str/con later, and some dex.

thalore is 11hp/level, wyrmic gives +2. for 13hp/level.
And both combined have a crazy amount of talents for +resists, +saves, and +armor. As well as the fungal talents for crazy healing.
The roar skill is kindof op as well, I think. I even removed higher skills in the fire drake tree after deciding, I had no use for more aoe/burning, after I maxed roar. MASSIVE aoe size. heavy aoe damage. And with the rank 5 skill that lets you instantly reset wild gift skills, I can use it twice in a row. (prismatic slash is good too, and will be reset)

Goddamn. Everytime I think I've found the most OP bullshit I find something new. Wyrmic is all kinds of broken. Infinite healing infusion? Have a belt with like +30% healing on it. I think I regen somewhere around 120 hp a turn right now and reflect 70 damage every time I'm hit.

The best part is you think you've found some game breaking "there's no way I'll ever die" trick and then something stuns and kills you in 2 hits because you got cocky and stopped paying attention to what you were doing.

From all the classes I've done, my vote is for oozemaster as being the most OP. Oozemaster starts with anti-magic tree by default, and instead gets additional efficiency with it when you do the quest everyone else has to do to unlock it. Their main pump stat is willpower, which synergises with both anti-magic and the fungus tree (insane regeneration healing), and fungus tree gives them almost infinite resource regeneration too to fuel their casting.

Combine that with super good AE damage, great single target damage, and passively spitting out slimes non-stop that both nuke enemies very hard, and absorb 50% of every hit you take for you. If that wasn't enough, they also have a passive skill to become immune to crits, and a few other statuses, can't recall. Start as the Thalor race as well for even more passive mitigation to just go overboard.

I actually didn't even finish with my oozemaster just because it felt like god mode once I reached the later part of the game. Walk into a room, throw out my AE cloud and just pass the turn a few times, everything's dead and I'm at full life. Not much challenge, lost interest.

Godammit, speaking of OP bullshit, I got anally intruded by the last boss, who used his blinding speed talent to oneshot mylevel 50 alchemistwith a double cast ;p

Doubly annoying because I had him to 10% life and had wall of stone ready to go to recover cooldowns next turn. On the bright side, I got what I wanted out of that character at least; unlocks for the dragon golem pet and uttercold talent tree.

In reflection I probably should have spent a bit of time farming to get a decent heroism infusion.

Oh well, time to try out a new class, figure melee this go around, haven't decided on mindslayer, reaver, cursed or berserker yet though.

Don't confuse Two Brothers with Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons. The only things of note in that bundle are ToME and Deadly Premonition (and $5.20 for DPDC is a steal anyway).

Faerie huh?

Guess we should ask, what mods are recommended?
I can just comment on ones I have tried :

Faster resting - YES YES YES ( this has no game impact, it just turns the framerate down when resting or autoexploring - makes it MUCH faster )

Online status indicator - useful if you care about validated games and the online events that get tossed out semi regularly

Beholders - fun concept, but they are very weak mid to late game due to the current eyedrain mechanic, think it needs a bit more work yet

Faeries - fun, reasonably balanced race, kind of limited in classes given how wimpy they are.

Auto-Transmo gems - great time saver ( puts gems into the transmog chest along with everything else, unless you are an alchemist or have stone alchemy)

Store wish list - handy when you find good stuff that you can't afford, saves having to do a lap of the stores trying to find it later

Enhanced compare - better, but still doesn't really work for me, comparing is a pain regardless

Infinite 500 - only relevant if you are doing infinite dungeon, unbalanced but entertaining ( it lets you level above 50 and increases skill caps - this has wildly varying results given the designers rarely considered levels above cap )

Wow yeah, just got this. Awesome and extremely overwhelming all at the same time. I got anally raped in the first area on my alchemist.

Ok my second Alchemist got fisted in the second dungeon, I made it to level 6 or something. Hooray!

Didn't even know I could level up my golem and equip him until right before I died. Anyone have some kind of noob guide/breakdown? This game is quite intriguing, I love the complexity/depth, but holy shit is it confusing the way the UI is designed.

Picked this up today on that indie bundle. I really like this game. Started a rogue at first. Still kind of feeling it out.

ToME Forumshas some decent guides (from what I can tell, I haven't won a game yet, but they've helped me get further) under the spoilers section.

Check the date first, some of them are very out of date. Another good source is the character vault on te4.org, you can search for winners of whatever class and see what builds and items people used.

thought most of it is fairly self explanatory really.

There is a good amount of trial and error for "where do I go now?". do you want that spoiled? or do you want that sense of exploration/discovery? That is easily the biggest thing for a new player. you are shown basically only 2 of the 1-7 level areas. and there are more..
A new player you might do the trollmire, tower, and go right to the old forest, at level 9. vets will be like level 15+ for old forest.

Right click monsters and inspect them. lets you hover over abilities to see what they do.
Infusions are really powerful.

The heals are good, and might seem like no brainers over the others. but some of the others are really good too.
Wild infusions. the damage reduction elements are pretty meh. but the remove physical or mental effects, depending on which you have is the REAL reason for those. they remove Stun, daze, iceblock, bleed, etc physical effects. things that stop you from using your skills. which is a very easy way to die.
Not a big fan of phase jump. too random, and not far enough. but can save you from time to time. esp if there is a small pathway fight. porting on the other side of a wall. Teleport is much better. although, if you didnt clear first, might just port you into more danger.

there is a wiki if you want a list of locations. or possibly what needs to be done in order to unlock the various classes/races.
