Space probes sent to planets provide better images at this time than any telescope in the inner solar system not actually at the planet being observed.

They should just outright outsource all NASA to SpaceX. Imagine what SpaxeX could so with Nasa's budget and infrastructure.
Just removing the stranglehold of the Congressional oversight would do most of it, though. Imagine NASA getting the same budget as a lump sum and no fixed ten-points objectives by the Space Committee, just auditing of the finances.

why are they then taking pictures of objects that its ill-suited for and then disseminating them so proudly? Is this some sort of "look what I cant do!" challenge?

What a piece of shit. I cant believe they spend 25 years on this.

I'm really confused that we haven't gotten a deep, deep universe shot yet. I figured that would be literally one of the first things they did... I mean wasn't it the whole damn point of the thing?

That was my understanding as well.

But clearly the priority is taking shitty shots of local planets that we have better imagery of already

Hey Araysar, I heard that an iphone in macro mode on earth can take a better closeup of a bumble bee than the James Webb telescope. What an outrage!

It would be an outrage if NASA faggots built a $20B telescope for 25 years to take pictures of bumblebees and then proudly posted those bumblebee pictures on nasa.gov

Are they doing this?

I dont know.

But I wouldnt be surprised.

Disband NASA.

Give Araysar a break guys. The space program he simps for won't be able to function for much longer due to sanctions, it must be a very stressful time for him

It was basically the first shot they published.

One of the differences between Webb and Hubble is that Webb collects more light and can take much faster exposures. The above picture was taken in ~12 hours vs the equivalent for Hubble that took 22 days. These planet shots take only a few minutes. As far as why? Well, had you ever seen Neptune's rings? I hadn't.

If it wasnt for Elon Musk the US would still be unable to put people into space. Russia has been continuously able to put people into space since Yuri Gagarin.

That had less to do with NASA than it did presidents and congress.

The Space Shuttle was an expensive platform and there was a desire to shift to deep space stuff and leave LEO to industry, so the way was paved for private industry to handle the LEO stuff. So shuttle was funding cut and retired before an adequate replacement platform was in place. SpaceX thankfully was able to rise to the task and has transformed the game (which was the original intent of the direction to get private industry involved)

So yes, Russia has been able to reliably launch people into orbit on an almost continuous basis. But that shitty period of growing pains for the US Space program has yielded great dividends and positioned them for the future of space travel. Yes, SpaceX is leading the way currently, but it has opened the doors for others that will one day be able to fill that same role or branch off from it

NASA at work. NASA had it's day, that day is over. Pre NASA was the NACA which was to promote aeronautics and such. NASA should move away from a production/mission role.

Out of focus bad pic before good cell phones. Pics of a patch from the shuttle that crashed in 2003 into TX and LA. Was centered right over where I lived. I sent NASA shit I found for a long time. Last time I found something was around 2010 found a white rivet on a fence post and NASA said keep it. Every time the wind blew or it rained I picked up crap that had fallen in the trees of on the house/shop and washed off.

Obviously not a patch on a uniform but probably a box of patches they gave out as PR "mission flown" patches". Very old guy down the road that was the same age as my grandmother that I had known all my life was walking across the pasture to his chicken house and a helmet fell into the pasture.

I had a freak early morning team building meeting at work the day it happened, and we just happened to get out as the shuttle came overhead. We were all like that's a pretty nifty meteor! I was to the north of it, so never saw any debris actually on the ground. I think it was hours before I learned that had been the shuttle.
