Nok/nkr = Norwegian kroner. $1 USD = 6 norwegian kroner.
PS4 games are crazy expensive here it seems (especially on PSN).
As to Microsoft marketing, they must have done something right. Because I remember when the 360 / PS3 thing came out, and people still ended up defending the 360 even though
- Released 1 year ahead of the PS3. Done by microsoft to get a head start, but at the cost of the consumers with an insane error %. I think the early reports listed as much as a fault rate of 60% of the first batches of 360s.
---- Microsoft violated several countries consumer laws which had reclamation rights tied to electronic purchases. Microsoft demanded the 360s shipped to them, though by law (at least in Norway) you should be able to get a new console directly from the retailer. However, Microsoft had given retailers a warning that if they allowed turn ins, the retailer would no longer be allowed to sell 360s. This was done to control the numbers of how many systems were returned, as no retailer would have numbers of returned consoles, only consoles sold.
- They had a HDD free version, which made it so developers could not make games to cached from HDDs. Rockstar mentioned this directly impacted LOD and number of cars/npcs on screen when they developed GTA 4 (so it undoubtedly impacted more games as well). This even though all PS3 had HDDs, but the impact of it was tied to all systems. This was around the first time I also heard of the conspiracies regarding MS paying to make things "equal" between versions, because the statement made it very clear that the PS3 could do something the 360 could not.
- 360 had very overpriced hard drives. You could buy a standard 2.5hdd for the PS3 and replace it. The HDD upgrades for Microsoft were 2-3x as expensive as the non brand counterparts. Could easily get a 250+gig hd for the PS3 for the same cost the 360 had from going from no HDD to their early 20 or 60 gig ones.
- PS3s all came with Wifi. That was a $50ish dollar addon to the 360.
- PS3 controllers were chargeable. 360 ones required change of batteries (adds up unless you purchase rechargeable batteries, which is yet another hidden cost)
Still, 360 was constantly hailed as being much cheaper than the PS3, and the PS3 was listed as massively overpriced. Even though it came with a blu-ray player as well.
Oh, and the PS3 was region free due to the blu-ray drive. 360 was not. Being able to import games saved me $20 ish per game including shipping. Not a bullet point that mattered much outside of Europe, but importing games from the US/Canada is much cheaper than buying them locally here.
Point being though, with all the hidden costs of the 360, and the constant failures and FU to consumers, Microsoft must have done some of their marketing right. Because the statements from the public never seemed to have anything to do with the actual realities or costs associated with the console. Even at max price the PS3 was hardly ever much more expensive than the 360 if you were to buy all the addons required to give the 360 the same specs as a default PS3. Only thing I have ever agreed on being better from the 360 compared to the PS3 was the controllers (minus the batteries).
EDIT: Should note that my experiences of the PS3 vs 360 also doesn't take LIVE / PSN into account. Because 95% of the stuff available on Xbox LIVE is not available outside of the US. PSN was free at least. I am aware that Xbox LIVE gold in the US was much better than PSN early on. Not sure what the status is between the two today, because they are still gimped services here compared to the US. I do know the majority of the marketed TV features of the Xbox One will not work here.
