The general stance should always be "we wont throttle." this will encourage people to always get the best performance while increasing sales. It will also encourage developers to always strive for the best performance. Pretty much a no brainer imo.

Not really, what you end up with is publishers being too cheap to properly optimize their game.

haven't been up on this half generational stuff...

But how did SONY get one upped by Microsoft byway of 4k bluray? A standard SONY mostly invented... so the new PS4.5 is not 4k bluray but the Xbone.5 is.. Dunno about the 4k streaming? And HDR?

Just kinda funny.

Likely a cost vs return assessment. If you figure we'll get a PS5 out by 2019 it probably doesn't make sense to lose some money on the Pro for something that isn't the highest adoption rate yet.

Considering the Xbox One S has a UHD drive and is significantly cheaper, I doubt it's only a cost issue. The more likely answer is that they just dropped the ball. Sony doesn't even have a 4K player on the market, and won't until the middle of next year, and they certainly weren't going to buy drives from someone else. They seem to think that streaming is good enough, but anyone who really cares about 4k tech knows that even the best streams don't hold a candle to a disc. The PS4 Pro could have been a really cool system, but they've held it back significantly in various ways and this was a big one.

They probably have stats that show how often the blu-ray drive is used. I've never used mine, personally. Data drives a lot of these decisions, I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't worth the $20 extra dollars. (or whatever the cost was)

I don't use my PS4 because I have an actual Blu-Ray player. I do not have an 4k player and would have used one.

Sony is also directly aware of how well 4K blu-rays are [not] selling too. I imagine that had some sway on the decision to cheap out on the Pro.

4k TV's still haven't started to sell a bunch yet either. There's a ton on sale black friday so this will probably be the year.

What are the numbers for ps4 pro?

I'm more likely to get a 4K TV for the HDR rather than the 4K at this point. The content just isn't there yet.

UHD tv's have a higher adoption rate than HDTV did during the same time period, and 4K discs are selling 4x faster than regular blu-rays did as well. Considering the price of a stand alone UHD player and that fact that a lot people bought a PS2 and PS3 just for their drives, Sony left a lot of sales on the table from people who would have bought the system just for the drive tech.

As far as total sales for the PS4 Pro, I don't think there are any concrete worldwide numbers yet but I imagine it's at least a few hundred thousand.

There's also no format war for 4k discs with widely variable quality issues that forced consumers to bookmark an avsforum thread to see which movies were actually top tier quality.

I have a xboner, I really should have gotten a PS4.... but oh well... and now that the half-generations are out... I WOULD have been all for the PS4 pro if it was 4k disk/uhd and 299, and I would have a PS4 and xboner... but now I just can pay $$ and... have another xbro? nah... so now they neither get me to buy something... lol guess that's okay with my bank account!

Half generations aren't out though, it's only the PS4 Pro that is a step up in hardware. The Xbone S is just a die shrink and Scorpio is still a year or so away. I agree that the Pro should have had a 4K blu-ray in it even if most people will rarely/never use it, but there was no way it was going to cost the same as the S.

So this may be the dumbest question in the history of this thread, but I haven't had a console since my PS3 died like 3 years ago. I live in a rural area and my only option is satellite internet which has a monthly data cap of 14GB and the speed varies between 10 mbps at 3AM and .1mbps at 8 PM. Lately I'm not sure why, but I've been tempted to buy a PS4 Pro. My question is, will this thing even be useable given my internet situation? I imagine it wanting to download a 2GB patch every time I stick a game in the thing and it taking hours and raping my data cap to the point where it's just not worth having. To those of you that have these things, how much updating is required and does this sound like a reasonable thing for me to do at all? I really have no clue. I doubt that I would be getting a new game more than every few months but still, if I'm going to play once a week and it's always going to have a big download to do then it's not going to be worth it to me.

Not feasible imo, unless you're ok with playing unpatched games. Looking at my recent downloads list on PS4, Dishonored 2 is currently downloading a 9.14GB patch, and I've got other huge patch DLs in there from The Division, Bloodborne, World of Final Fantasy, etc. It's known that FF XV has a day one patch that is like 7GB. All normal for games these days.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. No way I can deal with even one patch like that.

yeah i wouldn't bother getting a new console without unlimited data. watch dogs 2 latest patch (1.09, not out yet) is 22 gigs. These patches are insane for SP games and multiplayer games are constantly downloading shit tons of data. The PS4 Pro patches for older games (TLOU, Infamous, etc) are all 4-10 gigs and won't come on the disc. GTA 5 regularly gets 4 gig patches.

man how do you live with 14 gigs cap. just looked on my router and in the past 30 days I've used 755 gigs. sure, some torrents and stuff but I fucking leave twitch streaming on for my dogs when I go to the grocery store. You need that google and facebook balloon shit that will give 100 mbps over wireless.

lol, do your dogs know you left it streaming? Either way, caps need to die in a grease fire.

Caps need to die, for sure, but developers could care a little more about how bloated their patches have gotten. It's more than a little ridiculous that many games have you practically download the entire game again with every patch. Even for people who have the bandwidth and cap space it's annying as hell to be constantly downloading multiple gig patches.

I have a xboner, I really should have gotten a PS4.... but oh well... and now that the half-generations are out... I would have probably bought a Pro to replace my standard if it were 4k capable as well, but the combination of that plus their gimping it to keep "parity" made it a no buy for me. I have an Xbone as well so I'll skip the S, but if Microsoft lets the Scorpio use it's full power and doesn't hamstring it based on the original I will without a doubt be buying on of those next year.
