For some of us, WoW is a shitty mmo. So to answer your question, nobody can. Which is how I feel about the state of mmo's atm.
The genre is somewhat stuck and stale. Possibly blocked by current tech? I dont think the genre is dying but there arnt exactly a plethora of fun MMO's out either...

I think it's held back by the large investment required vs the amount of risk that is needed to advance a genre..

That may be a part of it, but it is more held back by the same people allowed to make the same mistakes, driving top down development and not listening to their team who have some awesome ways to implement new things. The MMORPG genre portion of this industry is worse than any other. I feel for those that are on the TESO team that have some great things to implement, but get told to fuck off by Paul Sage because the guy is an ass to work for and it is his way or the highway - and this is why the game will suck.

Paul Sage should never be in the position he is in. Along with a few others.

All that needs to change, and we will see better games as a result. But... Unfortunately the next batch of failures has already started with the same people responsible for the last garbage launches.

Nailed it. They hire the same guy who made another bad game because "it shipped"

They need to hire new blood but the cost of making one of these games requires hiring someone with a "Proven" track record, or they won't get the funding.

To bad proven means shipping another shitty mmo.

When you stick to the basics (and don't tangent off into personal attacks on your least favorite devs) you make a lot of sense. The mmo industry needs new blood in a serious way. The same fuckwits keep making the same mistakes, while they copy WoW/EQ LITE in all it's forms.

It's time to give some youngbloods the reigns and boot out the idiots that have fucked us over with endless WoW clones.

However, I do think some of the old guard (Brad, Mark, Richard, etc) also have something to offer modern mmos. But only because much of their initial design implementations were abandoned to cater to the casual pussy mindset that has infected the genre since WoW and it's clones took over. Much of the old guard's ideas are new and fresh again, while every pussy mmo is failing.

ifMarkJacobs would have anything new to offer besides his latest Kickstarter's organized beggery, he should drive the Delorean back in time and implement it in Warhamer Online, drop the EA grey suits paranoia act and stop blaming everyone for his own mistakes. Also it's been deleted from Tumblr butRichardGarriott did a quite bad managing experience during Tabula Rasa development, shitting on financing, acting like a little bitch. And I don't really know aboutBradMcQuaid but he was part of Vanguard development, which should speak of itself.

These people were once part of a successful project, but the current MMO development plague is built on obsolete past fames, rather than quality / design / development. You were the key guy on some awesome 20th century online game ? Good, please take a seat and wait for your turn. We definitely need new blood, which won't happen since MMO Development is actually working like Hollywood, aka names over creation and licence milking over taking risks. This genre will reinvent itself on its own ashes. Maybe. We just need to let it burn to the ground.

I would highly encourage you to check out the Camelot Unchained progress and roadmap. Despite Mark's serious flailings in the past, it really sounds like CU is trying to reach that niche that some of us are looking for.

Will it be enough? No clue, but it's a hell of a lot better than where EQNext or TESO seem to be heading.

In hindsight (always 20/20 or better) I'll bet Mark regrets taking on the WarHammer IP. I'm sure Blizzard is very happy they aren't tied to it. Preexisting IP's tend to hamper mmo's as a rule. Lotro and StarWars galaxies being the exceptions, but even they didn't see monumental success.

the fact that anyone could fuck up IP's like star wars and warhammer should result in a permanent ban from the video game industry. seriously, how fucking incompetent can people in the industry be in order to fuck up a star wars MMO, TWICE???

What was wrong with SWG? It's been forever but I can't honestly remember any real issues, unlike say AO which I can very vividly remember that horrid launch.

Holy. Hell. Just off the top of my head:

-It had literally the worst first day of any MMO Launch ever. One of the first to use web server auth but no one at the company knew how to build a cluster to withstand the load. Less than 10 people logged in first day or something.
-DB issues for months after launch, impacting most of the game aspects on a level similar toHorizons.
-Worst pop-in of any game I have ever played, in part due to the small loading bubble around player, in part due to the above DB issues.
-Broken skills, encounters, and locations; Z-Axis completely broken at launch; whole professions useless at launch
-Terrible world design; whole planets with vast empty spaces of nothing. End of the second week we had seen every part of every planet, including the wild hostile desert planet and Endor.
-Dev lies about the Jedi class exceeded even the Fiery Avenger claims.
-Later on, Devs set the standard for blowing out an established community with the Combat Updates and then essentially redesigning and relaunching the whole game yet again while it was live with NGE, "New Game Experience". I accidently a whole game.

SWG didn't ruin my childhood but it was an absolute shambles of a game; mostly due to them scrapping whatever had come before and building the entire game from scratch in 18 months. I had a number of friends that stuck it out and played for a while and liked it; reportedly after years it came together more and wasn't the worst game ever. There were some sandboxy elements, and the guys who stayed in my circle were the old UO hands who liked being shopkeepers and mayors of player-towns.

Koster had some good ideas mixed in there; requiring people to go to cantinas for services provided by other players seems to dovetail with some of the other threads decrying the death of social contact in MMOs. I liked the effects and affects from dancing/music. My Creature Taming/Teras Kasi/Carbiner/Medic was a fun character to play, at least for a bit, in the parts of the game that worked. Vast wasted opportunity, though.

How Bioware fucked Star Wars was an absolute travesty. They were given pretty much unlimited resources and made the biggest piece of shit MMO on the market relatively speaking.
