The best way I've heard FF8 summed up before was "It does a large number of small things things wrong, but a small number of really big things right". Yeah, it was confusing and weird, but the character growth of Squall was unmatched, had amazing music, and a really unique method of storytelling. It's certainly not for everyone, but it will always be my second favourite.

I've still never played more than the first few hours of FF8. I've got too many save games started already to get into it right now, but I know I definitely should give it a shot at some point.

First, tho, gotta finish this run through of FF5, and then get back to my FF9 save. Made it to the Black Mage Village in 9 and then kind of fizzled out a month or two ago. The story is amazing, but the combat/character advancement system is kind of meh, ended up getting the FF5 itch in me in the middle of it...

Lies. 5 is my second favorite:(
This backs up my grand unified theory of Final Fantasy games if you like 5 and 8.

Basically there are people who like FF because of the gameplay and the story is secondary. There are people who like FF because of story and the gameplay is secondary.

People who value gameplay the most most love 5 and 8, the battle systems were the strongest in those games with weak stories.
People who value story the most love 4 and 9, the stories were the strongest in those games with weak gameplay.
6, 7 and 10 have a good mix of both so most people like those and you'll see them most commonly named as the "best" FF.

12, 13 and 15 are unfinished development hell trash undeserving of the FF name. 1, 2 and 3 are dated. 11 and 14 are their own thing as MMOs.

I don't disagree with you, but there are exceptions. I personally prioritize story over gameplay by a large margin, but 4/8 are my top two, with 9 being one of the most disliked, and 5 being "didn't care enough to finish". I think it just comes down to the story elements. Squall's journey as a character to grow out of his stocism/being a loner, and the SEED program really resonated with me for some reason, while I found the silly chibi-looking comedy elements to 9 really off-putting.

Just for reference: 4 > 8 > 6 > 7 > 10 > others > 9, 15 (didn't play 13 or finish 12)

INB4 yet another FF "what's the best and why?" derail. But at least we're not reddit who rank FF13s as the greatest of all time. Kids these days.

I agree with you, I love 8's story and hate 9's graphics. I've just noticed that in general most people don't rate FF8's story and like FF9 for some ungodly reason.

The nostalgia is kicking in now and I'm hankering for some 6. Is there an accepted best version to play via PC? (emulation included of course)

There's a few other variants, in that some players really value the high fantasy over any of the tech/steampunk/modern elements. Also those that enjoy characters with more defined class roles versus the entries where you can largely make any character into any class/job. Personally neither of those two really affect me, I think both can be done well and if so can enjoy either type of those two specific styles.

8's cast just never really grabbed me for whatever reason. I think part of it is I just think the 6 -> 7 age was the very best of FF and while 7 did try a bunch of news things, most of them hit for me while a lot of what 8 tried to change up was a miss for me. I hated 8's battle system, and the story just had a few too many "the fuck..?" stuff in it. Then again, I'm not as big a fan of 9 that most others of 6 seem to be. I like the game a lot on the Mist continent, but as you go away from it, the story just looses its cohesion for me. A lot of the art and design is okay, but most of the systems for character development and battles weren't all that hot for me.

My list would look something like 7 > 6 >> group of 10/Tactics/12/9 > 4 > 5 > the rest. That middle group I basically just flip flop on constantly as I replay them. Still need to reload the remastered 9 on the PS4, might enjoy it more being able to speed up some things.

8 sucks, period - "what FF is best" derails can go on for years and months but we all know in our heart, 8 sucks end of convo.

"But it's story" no, it sucks, 7 at least managed to present a story in the game, with lots of "outer game" stuff and deep dives for more and more enhancement.

8 bungled so many "little things" it fucked up even telling a coherent story in and of its self- it HAD to have external and deep dive type aspects to "start" to make any form of coherence.

Here, have a maggot infested wagu steak.... Yeah well it has tons of small things fucking it up, BUT ITS WAGU (square namesake! Convoluted anime storyrreeeeerrrruuuu!)
