So I switched back to my sorcerer character, and realized I love it. There's a little melee combat involved, at least when fighting stupid hollow in the beginning, and ranged attacks are powerful. Plus, after getting used to the system more, locking onto a target doesn't seem nearly as cumbersome as it was when I first played through.

So I keep resting at the first bonfire you come to in forest of fallen giants and there is that big giant right at there walking in the water. Super easy to kill as a mage and 1k souls each kill.

Any reason not to farm that up for a while?

No, not really a reason not to farm anything, but the first place I always go for farming is Heide's Tower. Decent xp, stunning artwork and great drops.

I'm glad you guys mentioned The Last Remnant. 94 hours played so far with no end in sight. Probably gonna do a New Game Plus playthrough on hard after I'm done as well.
Awesome! I need to experience the full PC version sometime. I have it, but I've never played it through since I had played it all the way through on the 360 (prior to it even existing on the PC). The PC version is just so so much better I want to play it badly, but dat backlog

I'm playing Zesteria finally, I'm pretty far in, just looking for iris gems now. I think it actually has a really really nice story, I'm enjoying it very much. It kinda reminds me of the first legend of legaia in a sense (the fog vs. hellion domain, etc). I'm also a little bit unclear why the equipment thing was confusing to people. It seems pretty straight forward - albeit unnecessary for the main game which is also good for a mechanic like that. But as for understanding it, seems pretty straight forward to me.

That was the main complaint, it is totally unnecessary for the main game. I regarded it as needlessly complex, maybe, just because it also seemed like it. But yeah, in practice it is straight forward. Glad you're enjoying it though, it was a really good story. I did about half English VA and half Japanese and enjoyed both of them as well. Think it ended on Jap so that was my last impression of it.

I certainly won't hurt you, but like others have mentioned levels are almost worthless anyways. Plus later on in the game you get way more souls from bosses/mobs

Err, to clarify. Levels don't do much to augment your durability passively. But stat gains from levels determine what you can equip, how much weight you can carry, how many spells you can cast, how much hp you have, how many swings before fatigue you get, which spells you can equip, etc. Getting some early weightload/hp/attunement slots/whatever will be helpful, but I'll agree with Noodle that you're not at an ideal spot to grind. If you wanna do some grinding go to Heide's Tower and hope for some nice, rare weapon drops. Some of the drops there will help you for quite a while.

edit: and remember the binoculars trick, since you're a caster.

Yeah should've clarified I meant that the Stat gains won't help too much for survivability beyond getting stats you need for gear.

Thanks for the DQ suggestions, guys. I have DQ 9, but I kinda wanna play its forebears first.

I've heard many times that DQV is a masterpiece, so that's definitely one I wanna get.

It has maybe the best DQ story, pretty great combat for turn-based combat, the monster recruiting system is very fun, and the game just feels very fleshed out. It's actually Akira Toriyama's (the creator of Dragon Quest) favorite game in the series.

Thanks guys! Appreciate the tips. Gonna keep rolling as the mage. I've got the 2nd spell slot but no spell to put there. When does that happen?

As far as story goes, I would definitely rank V and VIII towards the top. (I didn't think VIII was contrived, especially when they hint at the bonus dungeon during the main story; plus, VIII had the alchemy system to breathe life into medicine, so that gives it bonus points.)

As far as gameplay, I'd give it to VI and IX. If the 3DS remake of VII is what I hear it is (haven't really followed the changelog from the PS1 version), it might take the top slot for gameplay.

DQ VI and V are pretty dope, and you can't really go wrong with them. Totally different paradigms, but very good regardless. I'd say 8 is my overall favorite, with VI and VI being a close second, followed by II. None of them are bad, but there are some clear standouts in my opinion.

IX is great, but the "extra content" basically boils down to how broken you wish the system to be. 3x Gladiators and a Sage with specific abilities means you basically faceroll stuff, but grinding out those specific abilities means you are spending a shitload of time rebirthing characters. It is extra content, but it makes Etrian Odyssey's grinding look absolutely pedestrian. And -that- is saying something.

There's only one thing I dislike about the skill system implemented in 8/9, and that's the Omnivocational weapon trait. I'd rather they put in a spiffy attack (like how Gigaslash was in 8) rather than "oh you can equip a sword on everything now". The point being: it makes the classes a lot less unique to have "cross-class" weapons. Examples of this being spears/axes taking the top slot, because they can one-shot metal king/platinum kings, whereas multi-hits and (especially) Metal Slash are bad by comparison.

(Yes, I know the Falcon Sword is pimp with Falcon Slash, but that's a specific case!)

The whole weapon spec thing fell flat for me, period. I always thought it was like you were mindlessly dumping points into stuff and hoping it worked out. The prospect of having to reroll to get a decent spec if you didn't do some serious research beforehand was kind of off-putting. I also hated this in the case of the alchemy pot in DQ8. This kind of customization opens up cool things but also can be an annoyance.

Honestly, the omnivocational stuff is basically just saying "cool, you did this, here's your hat" type stuff. Nobody who is killing old bosses is running a Monk with a sword. They are all using Gladiators and Falcon Blades. The omin-stuff is more just about making leveling other classes for passives and what not easier. Actual endgame use is non-existent.

I can see why melee has some advantages over Magic now that I've tried to get into Heide's Tower. Took a few deaths, but I figured out how to beat the sentinel dudes. Not terribly too tough, but I can't get very far, before I run out of magic shots, and then they all respawn if I go back to the bonfire to recharge. Starting the process all over again. I watched a guy use strafe to easily melee them all down, which is fine, and I don't mind doing, but my Sorcerer is slow on his feet it seems, not sure if there is a stat that effects that? Because I couldn't get out of their hit boxes, and would get hit nearly every time I was trying to strafe around.

Decided, after spending a couple hours trying to make it work, and losing a few souls in the process, that I'm going back to Forest of Fallen Giants, and gonna do my things there, and then come back to Heide's Tower later, when maybe I have some more stuff.

Crone i found the best way to deal with those dudes is to just skip them, they're hardly worth the effort. Also they have lazer beam targetting against melees, a common DS2 complaint, so it's bullshit.
