I hate it when people refer to a video game as "important." How the hell is it important? It won't be culturally relevant in 5 years and it isn't going to solve the Middle East crisis.

In my opinion, it's important for the RPG genre. It's absolutely not gonna solve the crisis in the Middle East or make you adopt some sort of new life philosophy, but it is an excellent example of how every single element in the game serves to add to the game experience and comminicate the major themes of the game. I could probably write a book on my opinions of Undertale and how its mechanics and concepts are a near-perfect example of how game design in a traditional psuedo-JRPG should work.

As far as "culturally relevant" goes, I could see this game being a textbook example on how to properly design a traditional pseudo-JRPG for years to come

I can see why melee has some advantages over Magic now that I've tried to get into Heide's Tower. Took a few deaths, but I figured out how to beat the sentinel dudes. Not terribly too tough, but I can't get very far, before I run out of magic shots, and then they all respawn if I go back to the bonfire to recharge. Starting the process all over again. I watched a guy use strafe to easily melee them all down, which is fine, and I don't mind doing, but my Sorcerer is slow on his feet it seems, not sure if there is a stat that effects that? Because I couldn't get out of their hit boxes, and would get hit nearly every time I was trying to strafe around.

Decided, after spending a couple hours trying to make it work, and losing a few souls in the process, that I'm going back to Forest of Fallen Giants, and gonna do my things there, and then come back to Heide's Tower later, when maybe I have some more stuff.

Running out of spells kinda get better later on I think, but it definitely sucks early on. I think it's when you can memorize more shit by raising hmm, that one stat. I'm glad they're going back to mana bar with DS3, the spell limit kinda sucked. Like you whiff your big spell, well too bad you only had one charge(or two) and it feels like shit, plus you can literally run out of stuff to cast so you have to resort to shit like using int scaling weapons and stuff which feels meh if you want to make a pure caster.

The armor you wear defines how fast you roll, and also the amount of iframes on the rolls iirc. Lighter armor is better, but obviously when you get hit, it's worse, so you have that tradeoff. Need to keep your weight at like 25% or under of your max weight to get best rolls(or maybe there's one tier at <10%, forgot). Also leveling adaptability, I think it was the name of the stat, makes your rolls better kinda. It's more of a melee stat though, especially for builds that don't rely on blocking(so like non str melee builds). Those sentinels can be pretty bullshit, you need solid timing. Iirc you also need to not be locked so you roll with better angles, that's often the case as a melee, you don't lock all that much unless you're blocking because it makes your rolls shittier by trying to keep you facing the mobs. Although for these mobs I don't remember if that's the case, maybe it's just a matter of timing the iframes correctly because their reach hit you regardless.

You don't need to roll out of the attacks of the sentinels in Heide's Tower. Just lock-on and then hold D. (Or right on the move stick if you use a controller. Also, this doesn't work for the one with the mace, just the ones with the swords/shields and greatswords.)

So I'm trying to get my weight down. When I'm in my player info/stats, it says I'm like 47%? I'm holding a lot of armor though that I'm not wearing. Is that a problem? Is there weight limits? I noticed at the Blacksmith, there isn't a sell option. So if I get something I'm not going to use, do I just drop it on the ground to keep my weight down?

Only your equipped items count for weight. Specifically, equipped armor and weapons (I don't remember if rings have a weight in DS2).

Keeping weight in DS1 was really important, but I don't think it's as important in DS2. As long as your load is under 75% and you have at least 20 Adaptability, you'll have plenty of iFrames to roll out of whatever you need to with good timing. Pyros is correct that the lower your weight, the faster you roll, but below 75% I think the speed increases are too low to make a differences to a new player. Just make sure you stay below the magic 75% number and you're golden.

So scholar of the first sin for ps4 was 20 yesterday and I forgot I had actually never played the DLC. Starting over is fine because it's one of my favorite games of all time. Real questions though.

How different is the base game? I heard they moved a lot of items around like branches and other stuff?

When should I enter Dlc areas? Right when I get to them? More importantly, will I know there's an entrance to Dlc or do you have to do weird stuff? Any preferred route in general?

Also, any weapons I should keep an eye out for? I'm a strength player and really like the 2h sword moveset. I saw a guy using a double blade thing that looked badass, but I feel it may be a Dex weapon?

Similar, but mobs have been moved / added. Some paths have been blocked by branches. It's somewhat a NG+ ish experience. They have changed enough that you will nearly constantly see small changes if you've played it before.

DLC areas are in shrines that you can activate with items. Nothing weird required, fairly straight forward. I believe they activate after the first great soul? Not sure, I forget. DLC is a fair bit harder than the first game. Being a STR player and not magic is good though, because the DLC mobs magic resist is so high it makes magic nearly useless. Not sure if they've changed that since I played. On my PS4 I stopped not having finished any DLC, but gotten near the end of all of them I think.

Double blade thing might be a twinblade. Can also buy a special one with some boss soul (forget which). I think it is dex yes. I played with it some in one build, but I never had much luck with it. It doesn't do much damage, but hits very fast. Might be a decent weapon to add poison or something.

Levels, so far as I can tell, are indentical and untweaked, but item and enemy placement have been overhauled. The game is harder because they start throwing more powerful enemies at you earlier. You might have, for example been wondering about the ogres Crone was talking about earlier - there's now right at the beginning of the Forest. The Pursuer is also now more...pursuey.

You'll notice a lot more petrified statues, and as a consequence you'll get a lot more fragrant branches. Enemy drops have been modified, as has item placement. I remember rushing the 75% minimum hp ring and finding something else in its place. The Heide Knight chilling in the forest isn't there any longer, so if you want the sword you'll have to farm the knights elsewhere.

Stuff like that. A STR build will serve you well in the DLC. My Scholar playthrough (which I still need to finish) uses a caster, and I'm having a rough time on the first DLC. The DLC is the hardest content in Souls, period, and they don't seem to want you to be a caster as the enemies are highly resistant. Luckily I'm HEX/DEX, but the stat requirements of that build have thus far ensured I'm not bulky enough to take any hits, so I took a break on account of frustration.

Awesome, I've been a little bored with fallout so might fire up ds2 and play through it again. Also need to do the bloodborne Dlc which will require a reroll since I'm midway through ng+ and want to do the DLC on ng

I wasn't a big fan of Dark Souls 2 DLC. They figured out that Magic is overpowered so they gave everything extremely high resistance to it. So if you were a sorcery based character the DLC was just one big "fuck you." The bosses also have a really high amount of hitpoints to the point where they become damage sponges while you're still fighting against a ton of one shot mechanics. For $20 the the game + DLC is worth it but I wasn't impressed with the DLC.

I think the biggest issue with Dark Souls 2, for me, was that the base game is way too easy and the DLC is way too punishing. They couldn't find a happy medium.

As a brand new player to the series, I'll attest that magic seems a little too powerful in the beginning. When I switched from my Dex noob to a new Sorcerer, the things I was able to kill so much easier was crazy. I was killing the huge giant in the beginning of forest with ease at a thousand souls a kill. The turtle looking guys with clubs near the Fire Longsword are a huge pain to me as a melee, and I just destroy them as a Sorcerer.

But it was bitter sweet. You start to realize your casting limitations as you get to areas like Heides Tower of flame, where you run out of magic and have to try and melee things down.

I think I am gonna try another play through but go strength this time around. I think if I can start getting better with block, that it might be an easier play through.

I thought the ds2 dlc were some of the coolest areas in the game. I was about burnt out after finishing the main game and first underground expansion but figured i would give the ice kindom a shot first and it ended up being one of my favorite levels in the whole series. I recommend that one at the very least.

Wow weapon durability is a real pisser now. Game is a bit harder. Also since I beat bloodborne my play style has changed and I'm yoloing a bit much

I found Bloodborne's habits rubbed off on me as well when I started Scholar. I don't think I blocked even once during my Scholar playthrough - it just felt weird after Bloodborne. And the yoloing comment rings true as well, and I enjoyed it a lot more because of it... at least until I found out my hexer - with limited fucking charges - does like 80 damage per dark orb to mobs in the DLC.

So from reading this I'm now about to enter May in Persona 4 Golden. Awesome recommendation from you guys, I just wish this thread was broken up by Vita/DS/etc.
