SE has had a bitch of a time with recent games barring the 13s. 12 took them like half a decade and XV is at going to be close to that from when it was announced.

Actually scratch that, XV is like 10 years out from when it started development. Jesus.

I remember hearing a long time ago they were working on porting XI to mobile devices. Was that squashed or still coming? Seemed really strange and impossible to me.
AFAIK this is correct, though obviously it won't be the same MMORPG because that's shutting down. SE said they want to try to recreate the game as a single-player experience and then port it to mobile.

There's been a lot of misinformation about what's happening with FFXI.

i) console support is ending 03/16 and there will be no more story development;

ii) the game will still be live for PC after that date.

Yeah, it's staying open as long as people are playing/paying, but no more content updates. Bug fixes and stuff, as well as any updates needed for hardware, but otherwise it's just going to exist there.

Project Setsuna is looking really good. Out in February in Japan so hopefully we'll see it here by fall at the latest.

Where Bravely Default was kind of a throwback to the old FF games, this one is supposed to be like a modern Chrono Trigger. Best of all, it's a PS4 game, not just handhelds.

Just beat Ni No Kuni plus whatever extra I could stomach before I just got bored grinding and playing Pokemon. Also still messing around with The Last Remnant. What should I play next? Has to be PS3 or PC. For reference I haven't played an RPG after FF9.

Resonance of Fate was by far the best JRPG last gen.
Where would you rank the "rest" of last gens JRPGs? I tend to agree with your opinion on most JPRGs, so I'm curious about what you think of the others.

Never heard of it, looks interesting. Would probably pick it up for 360 if they ever bring backwards compatibility for it to the xbone. Seems unlikely though.

Well, last gen wasn't all that impressive. You have to include action RPGs in order to even be bothered trying to make a list of the great ones. Not just referring to ___ Souls--Nier, Drakengard 3, and Dragon's Dogma were all excellent too. Traditional JRPGs really only had the XIII's, Valkyria Chronicles, Last Remnant, and [dropping a tier] Tales of Xillia 1&2. Gust/NISA/Compile Heart stuff isn't really my thing (though I'll admit to enjoying the PC versions of Neptunia), I thought Tales of Graces f was terrible, Star Ocean 4 had a fun combat system but the story, characters, and voice work was so unbearable I shipped it back after ~25 hours or so, and Disgaea is about the same: fun battles, can't stand everything else. I wanted to like Ni No Kuni, but the AI and endless handholding just killed it. I expect I'd really like Lost Odyssey and maybe Vesperia too, but never had a 360.

I guess saying Resonance of Fate was the best JRPG I played is kind of faint praise, so I'll just add that I'd put it up there with the best of the PS2 gen as well.

Star ocean 4 is one of my favorite rpgs in a long time, just really sucked me in. Except rhe little girl.

I am way too overwhelmed with games. I have fallout, dragon age, Witcher 3, gta 5, divinity, and a whole bunch more from Christmas. I think I'll just beat dragon age real quick and then decide next. Too many games-itis

Trails of Cold Steel has been pretty good so far, enjoyable turn based combat for anyone looking for that. You don't necessarily had to have played the PC games on Steam either, there are some minor references to things but nothing major.

I am looking forward to the game, but definitely gonna play the two Steam games first. Snagged the Collector's Edition too - figure a limited edition of a critically lauded niche game launched well past the prime of its platform might be worth something sometime.

This year's JRPG release list on reddit with nice formatting and current known release dates. Going to be a good year.

Looks stellar. The only definite nonpurchase there for me is Bravely Second. Tried and tried and tried (very recently) to get into the first and was rewarded by being bored shitless.

A handful of those games I'm not familiar with, though.

There's a bunch of meh games on the list.

Bravely Second is supposedly not amazing, although still similar to first one enough to be worth playing(assuming you liked first one).

Final Fantasy Explorers had very mixed reviews on the japanese version, it's like a pretty poor monster hunter.

Genei Ibun Roku is some weird collaboration between Fire Emblem and Persona, but it's mostly a bad Persona with a lot of idol looking shit, looks pretty fucking terrible, and it's a Wii U game so it also sold like complete dogshit, good chance it's never ported.

Nights of Azure is one of these modern low budget jrpgs, a bit similar to Neptunia or Atelier games or Fairy Fencer F. Will probably be fairly average, nothing outstanding but still nice to play, assuming you don't mind anime tropes everywhere.

Odin Sphere is just a HD remake of the PS2 game, which was pretty good, but the name isn't obvious it's just a remake.

World of Final Fantasy is some weird mix of all FF universes together, with cutey designs and apparently pokemon-like mechanics(think Ni no Kuni/FFXIII-2), not sure if it'll be any good.

Some are meh, one is no, and a few I've never heard of.

And yet... a new Fire Emblem, a new Final Fantasy, a new Star Ocean, a new Persona, a new sequel to a Shin Megami, a new Dark Souls.

We go years without new entries from ANY of those series releasing, excepting Dark Souls. We get all of them this year.

...plus DQ remakes on 3ds <3.

Underrail is a really solid Fallout 1/2 clone made by three guys that's like 13-15 bucks on steam right now.

Single player isometric turn based RPG set in an underground/railway/sewer/cavern system. Post apocalyptic. It was early access, but its feature complete and released now.

Save 7% on UnderRail on Steam

Better not be any Bravely Second spoilers in this thread, or I'll crash this board with no survivors.
