I carry a knife to cut strings and open boxes. Sometimes I try to turn the occasional screw. If I thought I had to carry a knife to defend myself, I'd carry a gun.

Heh, it's not a one or the other thing. Ideally you would like to be carrying both.
They work in perfect unison.
Knives tho are very compact ,and can be worn on you at all times. They also deal massive damage with minimal effort with a fast deploy.
We teach women self defense with knives because it truly takes no strength at all to take a very large man down quickly. Just the motion of the blade itself is devastating.
I live in Texas, and the knives you can conceal can be up to 6 inches for the blade, and some can be as long as 8 inches. That is a huge knife.
If anyone is interested in FMA. I suggest finding a Bahala Na school in your area.
I'm white american, and have been taking it for 6 years now. I never realized how much all our weapon skills derived from the Philippines. Even terms like Leathernecks come from Marines stationed in that area ,and being constantly cut down with bladed weapons.
Bahala Na focuses more on the sword, or what everyone calls the Machete/Boa used in jungle warfare.
The branch I learn from is called Sayoc Kali which focuses more on urban warfare, with many different weapons.
If anyone wants to look that up there are quite a few videos on it. Very fun stuff if you are into FMA.
After talking to allot of reformed criminals, and mercs. You would be surprised how scared they are of Blades. Some of the criminals I talked to said they would rather be shot.
There is allot of bladed warfare in prisons, and in the streets.
That's the reason why I cited the loud sound of the Cold Steel deploy. Allot of Criminals know that sound, and it has a similar psychological impact as the racking of a shotgun.
Also Cold Steel are amazingly crafted.
I still love the Cold Steel Tri Lite to this day.
