As far as I know, to be canonized you have to perform a number of miracles that then have to be examined by some kind of investigation. There are those who are invited to argue against the existence of said miracles, like Hitchens was I believe at one point. Apparently they don't look too closely at the miracles saints performed while alive though, because I'm fairly sure that miracles aren't really miracles.

Oops. I should have read more. They revoked the permission after they found out it was lobbying for legal marijuana. It would have been fine to lobby against legalization though, just because.

Actually, John Paul the 2nd did away with the investigation process so that he could ram a bunch of canonizations through during his reign of terror, and I'm pretty sure it hasn't been reinstated.
