I'd be much happier if the location the president was at wasn't DC and was more centralized. Not expressly for safety but mainly because the white house is a historical location, we don't need to be making changes to it to adapt it to the 21st century.
Double whammy is that the president could reside in several locations that are infinitely more secure. One location not secure enough? Demo / reno it, bring it up to standards and have the president at one of the other 4 locations. None of the locations would be based in high cost areas, they would all reflect WHO the president presides over.
Oh cool, you are president? You get to stay in Wyoming, South Dakota, Kentucky, or Oklahoma.
