I fell in love with this villain primarily because he has so many parallels to Vincent from "Collateral". He has no horse in this race, he just does what he does because he's good at it and he takes pleasure in that fact. You first see this when he encounters the protagonist in the bathroom and he realizes that he may have finally met his equal. Ramrowan WANTS to be challenged. He wants one of two things: A) To know that he can kill his equal in combat or B) He wants to die knowing he died against the best. We are reaffirmed of this when Ramrowan spares the protagonist in the above fight scene, while observing the protagonist's ability to engage multiple opponents with ease. This confirms Ramrowan's notion of him: That he is truly a warrior of his caliber. Then we see this even further when Ramrowan shoots the tube containing the eyeballs to really enrage the protagnist to send him into a blood-fueled fury and ensure Ramrowan that he is fighting him to his absolute potential. When he is finally bested you can see the look of approval in Ramrowan's eyes. Then we later discover that Ramrowan in fact spared the little girl because of her kindness towards him, a last nod to the protagonist. A reward from beyond the grave for his performance in combat. Truly an outstanding film.
I linked the club shootout from "Collateral" because in my opinion Vincent displays this same level of character when he saves Felix. He has no motivation or benefit to gain by keeping him alive at this point, yet he does it out of respect towards Felix after their time shared together.
