Saw this story elsewhere and according to it, the guy takes one of the sword fighting martial arts (Kendo?) and was coming home from a class at that time, when he was flagged down by the building security or owner. So he actually knew how to use it and it wasn't some cheapo display sword that would break after a single hit.
if you look at the last 3s, he sheaths the sword, looks like it's been practiced for tens of hours
Yeah, for sure that guy practices Iaido.
One of the great missed opportunities of my life is that having spent over a decade in TMAs doing swordwork I wasn't present at my BJJ gym the night a drunk walked in off the street and assaulted the instructor with a replica katana.
i'm curious as to why you mentioned iaido specifically. nothing of what he did is really congruent with iaido's teachings other than that he had a sword.
there are a whole bunch of martial arts that use katana and the way he sheathes it at the end is one of the basic ways that all of them do it
Iaido is by far the most common practice that uses a metal blade. There are various kenjutsu lineages, but they're vanishingly rare outside Japan. Metal blades are not typically used in Kendo, Aikido, or traditional japanese Jiu jitsu. They use shinai or bokken for cost and safety reasons.
As far as the actual video, sheathing the blade is the only thing he did that qualifies as a technique at all. Everything else was just running around while holding a sword.
I have a black belt in Iaido. Trained pretty seriously for 5-6 years in my 20s while also getting a black belt in Aikido. Definitely a weeb phase. Switched to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu when I grew out of it.i suppose that makes sense. i wasn't sure if what you said had any actual reasoning or if it was just the statement of some weeb who heard of iaido and so tries to bring it up in any kind of context whether it's applicable or not
i think it stops being considered "weeb" and no longer cosplay when you train it as an actual skill?I have a black belt in Iaido.
