I dunno was it maybe because you had to basically replace the engine every day and the extra time and labor started adding up?
You might be on to something there. Between 1940 to 1948, wages doubled for the average manufacturing job. That kind of wage growth in a low skill job sector like that has been unheard of for decades, now.
