Some interesting ideas in this, but they certainly are not gracefully implemented in the scenario. It feels like the characters never figure out anything by themselves. They always need some other character or some document to do chunks of exposition that move the plot forward. Very lame. To be fair, this is based on a book, so it may very well be that these issues are inherited from the source material or that this type of construction works better in book form. At the end of the day though, fix it or don't adapt it? Not awful like Tarot, but not good. The cast does what it can with what it has, and the direction is nothing special (be it in a good or bad way).
