I think that was Dominic's decision because he wanted to spend more time with his family and have a rest.
Can't find that now. Saw long time ago on IMDB

He was living in Baltimore for the shoots and travelling back to the UK some weekends to see his daughter, it was doing his head in as he was missing her.

Homicide life on the streets is a must read imo

Also, almost though the fifth season again. Even though it's the weakest of the series, goddamn it's still great.
