Reddit is trying its damnedest to kill themselves off like digg. There's no quick replacement so that will be a slower death as people leave over apps being killed and then subs being nuked.

Never ceases to amaze me how corporations can willfully kill their own market base. We are seeing so many examples of this over the past couple of years. And the trend seems to be accelerating if anything.

In this instance, they are trying to figure out how to monetize their base. They are killing themselves in an attempt to figure out how to eek out as much money as possible as opposed to allowing the business to develop around their dominance. It is a crazy thing to watch.

I dont understand how this model does nto work currently if they are taking 30%-60% of all the sub revenue from the streamers already. Coupled with the shitty ad system they force upon their steamers, either their overhead is way too fucking large, or Im just not seeing some hidden costs here.

Think about how many worthless people were at Twitter, now think of how much worse it has to be at twitch. Elon could get that shit down to 3 monkeys and 1 supervisor.

I think Twitch has massively overestimated their market and their platform. They think they are Google and Facebook, which currently hold a duopoly on the ad market. Those two sites combined drive 100s of billions of clicks a day (pulled that number out of my ass) compared to the millions of views Twitch gets per day. Sure the twitch content is more specialized and meaningful, but they don't have the platform to be that greedy on ads when the market is the way it is. Instead they should've looked at what they do best, providing a platform that can scale and reach globally with minimal entry fee. Then gouge both the streamer and consumer of streaming content on different features, extensibility of their platform. Instead they chose community engagement in woke politics and gouging their main tool to their platform (their streamers). Shit strategy but not surprising knowing the clowns they have working for them.

They could've hosted their own esports events, concert events, fuck milk their biggest fanbase and host pride events and reaped money and expansion off that. But everyone trying to get a bigger piece of the that half a trillion dollar ad market, probably cause its such an easy passive revenue generator.

There are several good answers already, but honestly I believe it is overwhelmingly that they have far too many employees that don't do anything while relying on an outdated ad model that flies directly in the face of their content delivery model.

I will continue to bring up the point that randomly cutting away from a live stream to show upwards of 2 minutes of ads an hour, and I have been served 8 ads in a row at points, is not only a bad way to serve ads but the worst way possible given the platform. It is goddamn infuriating that they don't try literally anything else and even more maddening that they are actively discouraging the type of ads that don't interfere with the viewing experience.

They're brainlets who believe they can copypaste legacy media conventions without even understanding them and assume it'll just work. It reminds me of how esports apes traditional sports in its presentation and comes across as a joke.

The amount of ads is just too much sometimes. The algorithm does not work very well. Also depending from where you watch the add variety is nonexistant. Watching from swiss e.g. gives you the same Diablo 4 add every few minutes. Owning the game makes it even more retarded.

Yeah, it seems to be a combination of too much overhead, retarded staff, and lack of innovation and thinking outside the box to find new non-intrusive ways to get money and add revenue in.

That's funny because, also from Switzerland, I get a rotation of 3 PSA about safe driving (I don't have a license), 1 ad for beer (I don't drink) and 1 for makeup featuring some french streamer I don't know (some men do, but I don't wear makeup). I don't think I have seen the Diablo one even though I could in theory be a customer. I guess the good news is that it means the algorithm does not know much about me or only uses specific things (like the fact I have not watched a single Diablo stream?).

About the previous comment by uniqueuser uniqueuser , I would give Twitch a little slack on that front, because while it is true one could devise ways to advertise to the viewers without it being disruptive to the viewing experience, it certainly much easier to find ads if the clients do not have to tailor them specifically for your medium and can use pre-existing TV ads. Live streaming is probably not big enough to have some sort of specific format that would be an advertisement industry standard.

I live in Houston and fully half of the ads presented to me are in Spanish. They have my viewing history and 0 of those are Spanish speaking streamers. Dumb as shit.

If you only watch one channel then just use your prime (if you have it) sub or if you, like me, jump around a lot or watch a lot of two channels (mst3k and rifftrax, for example) use turbo.

Pre-rolls are more aggressive during prime time but most PC blockers will purple screen them and auto-refresh til they are gone. Most solutions prevent all midrolls.

But if you're watching on mobile you are already their bitch so can't help you there.
