Maybe, but what would be the benefit? People aren't watching them because they're good at gaming, they're watching for the personality. Last time I checked Tetris didn't have that high a viewer count.

To me it just seems like the easiest scam ever. You play a game while some woman acts like a woman fawning over the legion of weebs all the while you two laugh all the way to the bank.

Can work as an independent vtuber (I'm pretty sure Zentraya is male and started as a pair, and there have been facerig bloopers in the past) but it wouldn't work for Hololive.
A) There's already a male branch of the company. It's called Holostars
B) They all needed to interview for the position, competition is tight, and reputation is /very/ important to them. If this happened a single time it would be a hit to everyone in the company. No Japanese company is going to take this risk. They get their pick of the litter of applicants, they don't need to do this.
C) They frequently play together IRL or in the live 3D studio together. If someone was doing this they wouldn't be able to keep it secret.
D) Why would they need to hand the controller to a guy? Why not to another girl? Why not just play themselves? It's setting up an unnecessary fail state. The people watching don't care if the person plays well. They only care that the person be entertaining while playing.
E) If a Vtuber /really/ wants to genderbend, they can - One of the most popular independent Japanese vtubers does exactly that.
Yes that's a female pretending to be a male pretending to be a female. Japanese trap culture is weird.

I think the voices are the barrier for most. What I hear as cute is revolting or painful to listen to for some of my friends. Some of the girls also fake this annoying baby-talk mode that even bothers me.
As for voice changers, they aren't very good yet. I looked into deep learning for restoring some old recordings our family has where we interviewed my departed grandfather about his time in the war and stuff, and the audio stuff was really primitive. You actually turned the audio into mel spectrograph image slices and used the usual image based AI on that.
Maybe things have improved since then, I never had any luck with what I was attempting (mainly noise reduction).
My faves among the english speakers:
Gura: A shark girl that is funny and dumb.
Vei: A dirty girl with a fun accent. Watching her play oblivion atm off youtube.
Nyanners: Cute and derpy and funny. Her best I've seen is playing euro truck simulator.
Watson: Teams up with Gura and they are so great together. Smart and good at games.

Ironmouse: Fiery latina with a funny voice. Often teams up with Nyan and Vei and they are so funny together.
