Thinking about taking a 3 week trip to the States,been before to NY, Boston and some north Mass. Being from London I don’t want the NYC/LA type shit, although I’m not adverse to smaller cities that are good fun. I’d like to walk the AT someday too. And I love beaches as much as mountains.

This will be taking place around may/june next year…Will be alone, though have travelled for years like this and it's preferable.

Oh, I want to shoot - Can you do this?

Guess what i'm asking is this, is there anything you as Yanks have on your bucket list/must see....

If you're wanna go in the offseason (say early October) do a national park roadtrip. Zion, Arches, Tetons, Yellowstone, GNP ect ect

Don't do this during busy season it will be a nightmare.

You can spend a few weeks doing the coastal drive from S Cal up to Washington, tons of shit you can find to do, again, doing all this shit in the summer like you plan will be rough.

I'm quite flexible on the dates - could make it Sept/Oct no probs..

Edit: If I make it October/November I could make it 4-5 weeks..

Texas BBQ tour, also have beaches though perhaps not as good as the coasts. Plenty of Texas members that I imagine would gladly take you shooting and with a lot of the stuff that would make your average UK citizen faint. Colorado obviously has mountains etc, it is also pretty much the craft beer mecca of the US though that's kinda caught on everywhere. Sept/Early october it's starting to get cool and the scenes along the mountain roads are stunning with fall setting in. Also plenty of places to shoot and this gun nut lives here...

You can shoot in any state fairly easily, but without knowing someone that wants to take you out to a private range or bring their collection, you are kinda stuck with indoor ranges and rentals which can get expensive. Normally only a very basic selection of handgun/rifles but a few places get expensive but allow some more exotic stuff and even full auto.

Good idea, less insects and snakes. You could look into some non-resident hunting tags too.

You could try Charleston; not an irredeemable cesspool unlike Chicago/Detroit/LA. Lot of great (and fattening) food, especially if you like fish.

Check out the Grand Canyon if you can. And maybe some Midwest states just to see how wide open much of the US is.

Don't go to the Midwest. It's horribly boring (for the most part) when it comes to natural beauty like you want to see. There are some gems but you have to go all the way to the Upper Peninsula or something. The Utah national park tour plus Grand Canyon is obviously probably the best for that. The drive from SoCal to Washington is also a good idea. You get a mix of cities and mostly nature. The Oregon coast is pretty badass. And there are a lot of fun beach towns in California.

Northwestern IL (and the loose diamond with Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota) is gorgeous and has some very rough terrain because it wasn't glaciated. Southern IL down by Kentucky is also pretty.

I second visiting the Grand Canyon. It's truly amazing, and it ranks up there with the greatest natural sights on earth.

It's also not far from Vegas if that interests you at all.

*Edit* Another west coast destination that's nearby Vegas and Grand Canyon is Sequoia National Park, with the giant redwood trees. It feels like you went back in time to the age of dinosaurs, and there will be a t-rex around the corner.

If you ever want to feel insignificant as a human being, visit the Grand Canyon and sequoias. Makes you realize how tiny and insignificant we are in the grand scheme of things.

All you'd have to do is go to a gun range, rent a gun, and buy some ammo. Then you just go out to the range and shoot away. It can be indoor or outdoor depending on what you find.

I'd do west coast as well. Grand Canyon, Sequoia National, Yellowstone, etc, etc just in Cali. You could do Oregon and it's 7 Wonders. Hiking the AT can be done sectionally but you don't have time for more than a small taste. It is magnificent though(what little I've done).

If you're going this late in the year and plan to visit any of the northern parks make sure you start there. By November you could definitely be running into blizzards in Glacier and Yellowstone.

we went in early October and ended up rolling through yellowstone about a week before they were closing the gates. Very few people though

Son, you just asked a really complicated question. What do you actually like? What get's a good "wow" moment from you? There are parts of every single state that can give you what you want, but you need to be prepared to find them.

The South has some of the most charm, grace and heartfelt "goodness" you will find anywhere on Earth. Charlston, Greenville, Sarasota, Lexington are all underrated cities chocked full of amazing things to see and do. Nevermind about places like Nashville, Knoxville and Austin that just exude character. New Orleans is a town unlike any you can find.

Even Florida for all it's news stories is an amazing place if you take the time. The Keys are as beautiful as Caribbean Islands if you just get off the main roads. You can find house boat bars tied up outside a marshy alligator grove and sip drinks the color of tropical flowers around you before heading off down the beach to see a 80 year old dude shred some bluegrass.


You want the real shit though? You get your ass to the West. You could spend 3 months in Texas alone and never get bored. Go the the Grand Canyon and drive along the Continental Divide from NM to Canada. Check out Big Sur. Go stare at the biggest goddamn tree you will ever see. Toss some trash at a fucking Grizzly from your rental car.

You could literally throw a dart anywhere in our country and you will find three weeks worth of "cool" shit to do.

Well I guess the West it is..Going to work out a route..Probably best to go North to South leaving in September? Think Pacific Crest Trail but not that (same route) just south and with car and heading into and out the coast? Ending up in the South. Wanna spend a fair bit of time in the south though - might even say fuck it and use my unpaid leave to make it 8 weeks or something. Want to make it a real trip of a lifetime though as the US has always been a business destination before for my trips there .
