Man the sad part with Vangaurd unlike Pantheon is that it was so close to being something good. Shame they didn't have someone at Microsoft who could of fired Brad taken it over and dragged it across the finish line properly.

Wait, this is like a real thing that's going on again now?

Game looks like it's totally the successor to EQ (the "real" EQ2) in a way EQ2 sure as hell doesn't. And Pantheon doesn't either, for that matter.

I'd love to play this, if I could clone myself and have some free time to jump in with both feet.

I hope you guys post some screenshots so I can do some vicarious living, especially of things that are similar to EQ like those item windows above.

Microsoft was deep in the hole for that specific project. The check Brad ran up with Microsoft at the time was considered astronomical in the early to mid 2000s.

40 million was considered a massive deficit. The management at Microsoft Games believed Brad was running a scam. This shot off a flurry of meetings related to the latest Vanguard demo that was turned over to Microsoft Gaming. This was after Brad refused to turn over a playable demo on 2-3 other occasions to Microsoft executives. He finally turned it over and they flipped shit.

They couldn't believe that this had cost them 40 million dollars to produce. Now they were right, but they were also wrong.

Microsoft was comparing Vanguard to Asheron's Call (Another Microsoft title) which was a shoestring budget comparatively. World of Warcraft cost 63m to produce, so Brad wasn't really out of the ballpark. He was also riding the high of EQ's success. Microsoft were assholes and some asshat fucked up the dev cycle.

Yeah, the disciple is an amazing class. I mained a bard but my buddy mained a disc and we would duo so much content with that combo. I ended up making a disc alt and he made a bard alt and we grouped those to max. I ended up playing the disc as much as possible outside raids. I also had a blood mage maxed which was an interesting healer/wizard combo. Disciple blows Blood Mage out of the water imo. It was so much more interactive and steady healing and dps.

Bard is fun to level up with modifying the songs and stuff but you really don’t switch songs much. It was a really boring main for raids even though I was top dps on most raid mobs. You just cycled 3 macros with a song playing. It was extremely fun in dungeons while charming and fighting and your song adding so much dps. I remember we were clearing the pyramids before it would respawn, had to wait. Grouping with and without a bard is extremely noticeable on the groups dps. Was kind of funny when some classes would get mad at the raid parse and bards were top dps even without adding in all the dps their song gave, they were really broken, needed tuned down. They fucking SUCKED at soloing though their dot songs and bow damage were fucking horrible. Yeah you could kill some ridiculous shit but you had to kite it for hours.

Ranger is good low and mid game but falls off at the top. There’s no top so that doesn’t matter here! Psionicist was a fun class, as was dread knight. Cleric is well done (they melee like dnd clerics) but not a solo class at all. They never die but kill so slowly. Necro was really fun, putting together your abomination pet with monster parts. It played pretty much like eq necro.

Sorcerer was pretty boring imo. Druid was similar to Sorc enough I thought it was boring too. Warrior was boring to me but eq warriors loved it, they could get really high dps on some mobs.

Don’t think I played any of the rest of the classes enough to comment on them.
Bards in VG are a lot like Bards in EQ where they get a ton of QOL things like run speed, etc?

Yes, but they don’t need to twist songs. As you level up you learn song components. You can add those song components to songs you can save to your hot bar. Need to run fast? Play your run/hp regen song. Dps? Dps song with fire dot, or dps +regen if your healer is struggling, etc. The only time you switch songs is when the situation changes. You also want to macro in instrument changes to most of the songs, they amplify the songs. Drums make your run faster, lute was better regen I think. Then macro your weapons changes into your dps songs.

It’s a fun class for grouping, just don’t try to solo past first ten levels or so.

Do brotherhoods work? Trying to convince some friends to try it and I loved that mechanic as a way to keep us all in line level wise

They are like EQ but on steroids, stack every movement song plus invis and levitation you run so fast the world can’t load fast enough. You want a fuck ton of one thing, stack those up etc everything scales and everything is good. Hardest part is picking how cool you want to be when.

He set out a plate that was just too large. To many races, too many classes, too much land to fill in. He should have aimed for a third of what he had and focused on making the engine stable. A lot of what vanguard did was super great. What killed it was that there was way too many blank areas in between... I know I noped out after a week just because of how terrible the client was. Freezes, crashes and general wonky-ness were a constant part of life in that game.

They share exp with members?
Yep, up to a full group of people could be in it. When my guildies and I were leveling alts after raids if someone couldn’t make it that night it didn’t matter. Another awesome VG feature most MMOs failed to copy.
