price of propane spiked in my area to over 4 dollars a gallon. i have propane heat, hot water and cooking. went thru ~230 gallons of propane last month.
Wear a sweater bro. Or 10.

I thought my house was drafty. I keep it 62(~10 outside) at night and last night I was measuring the duty cycle of the heater, 50%. No idea if that's good or not. What do you keep your temperature at and what's the duty cycle of your heater?

I keep ours at 66 (although when I'm not home I'm sure my wife puts it up to 68) and in temperatures like today (-5 or so air temperature) it goes on probably 1.5 times an hour for 8-10 minutes each time. No idea what duty cycle is, this is all from what I can pull out of my ass.

I don't know what that means but I'm sure it is so terribly inefficient that you guys will be laughing at me and/or wishing you were selling me natural gas.

The weather has been nice and all this winter so far, but I wouldn't mind a long stretch of steady rain. I've never dealt with a drought emergency and I don't want to.
What does "dealing with a drought emergency" mean to someone that lives in the city?

15 minutes / hour = 25% duty cycle (time on divided by total time). Electrical Engineering speak for ya

I love it, Saturday night went into the market, came out with our cars covered in 1-2 inches of snow, no winter weather advisory. Sunday, again no winter weather advisory, it dumped easily 3-4 inches of snow throughout the day. Facebook blew up about the unexpected snow and the worst driving conditions ever. We've gotten more snow out of these two no snow advisory events than the huge named winter storm warnings that blew right over our area.

State of emergency here. Driving ban, $2,500 fine if you go out. I have never seen a list of closings longer. Check it out:

WNDU - Closings

Almost cold enough to do the boiling water in the air trick.

As said, I've never dealt with it. But friends and co-workers have said that the price of water gets jacked up and they ration the amount you're allowed to use. Also produce shortages and/or extreme drop in quality. Additionally, it's been a terrible ski season.

Snow was totally in the forecast man, although it was all over the place on times and amounts. AccuWeather is decent but NOAA (weather.gov) is supposed to be the best and where pretty much all the other weather sources get their info from, I think they probably make little tweaks though to differentiate themselves from each other.

I will confirm that the NOAA site is much better than Accuweather or the Weather Channel.

The weather channel, both on TV and the site, have gone to utter shit. Its not even a weather service anymore, they are trying to be an entertainment outlet. Accuweather is ok, but I've lived and died by NOAA for years now. Anytime there's outdoor activities to be had they tend to trump all the info my friends are getting elsewhere once the day arrives.

weather.com blows.

http://www.weather.com

"Is the sun taking a BREAK?!"
"Disabled Kitten gets Helping Hand"
"Earthquake threat! WHERE?"
"Shark PHOTOBOMED Her Kids!"

It's like idiocracy for weather.

Yeah its gotten pretty bizarre. They absolutely raped the smartphone app, I uninstalled that thing sometime last year and never thought twice about it. Was an awful unintuitive resource hog, and I actually liked using it before. Shitheads.

What's the best smart phone app for weather? I tried accuweather, but it blows donkey balls. I'm using the weather channel right now, but I don't like it much.

I just use my Galaxy installed weather widget, but its accuweather based. If I really need to know serious specific data I use the NOAA site on my desktop. Sadly, last I checked, there wasn't a really decent android app for NOAA, just some third party thing pulling the data and not too smoothly.

Yahoo Weather is what I'm using these days, although their radar is sometimes shit. As in it will be a blizzard and the radar shows zero precipitation.

I'll back NOAA too. It's definitely the most reliable for a 4-5 day outlook.

Cannot state how much I love having a wood burning stove. In a year or two, when I have gotten my 'money' out of this one, I am going to upgrade to a larger version, maybe one with a built in blower, and sell this one in the papershop.

Given that I have a reasonable amount of land that I can timber and most people in the area will let you 'clean up' any storm downed trees on their property for free, it is easily the cheapest heating source I have had. All it takes is time and muscle.

You are not wrong, but of course the flip side is, you have an actual fire going on inside your house. Heating fires are the second leading cause of burning down your house, cooking being #1. Ongoing maintenance and inspections are key, and of course keeping the area clear of combustibles.

So far this is the warmest winter I can recall in western Canada
