I'd say that the Armenian folk influence on SOAD's song writing is close enough to Indian stuff that is a pretty easy jump for people used to western stuff. Also, Serge's register is on the higher end and can have a bit of nasal tone which again makes the leap to Indian language/tone possible. It's also a catchy rhythm which SOAD has quite a bit of.
