The Wii's top 2 selling games (Mario Kart 34mil, Mario Bros 28mil) both outsold the 360 and PS3's top selling games, even if you add them together to account for the userbase being split over 2 consoles.

In fact, if you take out Wii Fit/Wii Play/Wii Blah/Kinect/Move attached games - Wii has sold ~700mil games vs 600mil Xbox360 vs 580mil PS3.

Nintendo may have sold less games PER console they have sold, not arguing attach rate here, but all those extra consoles sold (remember, all at a profit) needed games to play as well.

So they sold more consoles and games than either of the other 2, man they sure are a failure.

You are basing your entire argument off attach rate, saying they failed because of that, that they have no customer base. It's impossible to fail if everything you sell was at profit. If you are a Zelda/Mario/Metroid/Pokemon fan, you are going to buy their consoles and handhelds. That's a customer base.

Let's be honest here, most of the game sales for PS3/360 are the same rehashed games. Whatever new flavor of CoD comes out every 6-8 months, and Madden Year+1, they account for 6 of the top 10 selling games for both systems, including the top 3 of both. That's what is boosting the attach rate. Almost every friend I have who owns an Xbox360, their entire library consists of those 2 franchises, and maybe a few GTA4s and Gears games thrown in.

Nintendo obviously has less powerful hardware and less 3rd party support from those 2 franchises. They also release their first-party games at a slower rate.

So okay, Nintendo is a failure. I just want someone to explain to me why there can't be different segments of consoles here. Why do people want Nintendo to compete with Ms/Sony and add another console to split these same games 3 ways instead of 2? I bet you MS and Sony don't want Nintendo to join in on that.

Let Nintendo do their own thing, let them have their tablets and motion control. If all 3 consoles were competing for the same space, it would be really damn boring. Stop trying to force them into the "generation hardware" wars. They don't want any part of it.

That's sad to hear about the Wii U sales, I hope it picks up for sure. Of the last generation of consoles the Wii was the only one I personally purchased, that's after buying a Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox from the previous generation. Honestly the whole hardware wars thing doesn't interest me at all, as was already said, most of those games or better games you can simply buy for your PC and they will look much better and play much better.

What is the appeal of playing FPS console games exactly? I played Halo for the original Xbox, it was awesome of course, I'm not denying that. But these new FPS games, Call of Duty and the like, I just don't get the appeal of them. There isn't anything new there that I can see, I played all of those games 10 years ago. How they can just continually release the same type of game and people just buy it up is beyond me.

Most console games just don't appeal to me in general. I remember playing one of the God of War games on the current generation of consoles and all I was doing during the boss fight was pressing buttons in sequence as they popped up the screen... Absolutely terrible gameplay. What's enjoyable about that?

On the other hand I can still remember my first time playing New Super Mario Brothers and it was amazing. It was my niece's birthday and my sister had the game and console which the kids were playing at the time. The second the NSMB disc entered the system it was like magic, the kids lost their controllers and suddenly it was the 80s and 90s all over again and we were all playing Mario together. That was a magic moment and I don't think that would be possible with an Xbox or a Playstation. That wouldn't be possible with Call of Duty.

Granted that some of it was likely based on nostalgia but it was also based on something else: Fun. That Mario game is fun. It was fun then. It's fun right now.

Maybe other people get that same feeling playing an Xbox or Playstation and putting their Call of Duty disc in but I sure don't.

Did you seriously just try to say that the only thing on the X360 is a bunch of FPS games, Charles?

You poor, ignorant bastard. I have well over 100 X360 games on my shelf. Of those games I have more RPGs thananyother genre by a very large margin. Of all those 100+ games a very large amount of them are console only and not available on the PC.

Trying to summarize this console generation's best systems, which absolutely destroyed the Wii library wise, by going "LOL CALL OF DUTY XBROS" is fucking disgusting. Get the fuck out of here.

I'm not aware of many Xbox games to be honest but I was referencing sales, which is what you guys were discussing. FPS games are simply what sells on those consoles.

There's only one Xbox/PS game that I wished I could have played and that was Dark Souls, which I did indeed get the chance to play thanks to it being ported over to Windows. I'm sure that I'm ignorant to other quality Xbox/PS games as well, but sadly those games aren't selling like the hotcakes that are Call of Duty and whatever other shitty FPS game people are eating up.

And I've played Call of Duty, several of them in fact. As I said, I played all of those games 10 years ago. There's nothing new there that I could see. Whereas playing the Wii, playing NSMB, was new and fun right along with that nostalgia that I told you about in my little story.

You are in the small small minority of XBOX/PS3 owners, Sean. You enjoy all types of games and everyone knows you play a lot of them.

Of the ~25 X360 owners I know, I'd say 20 of them have libraries consisting only of FPS games (CoD, Battlefield, Gears, Halo, etc) and Madden - this is the majority of XBOX/PS3 gamers. Game sales totally back this up. Not like this doesn't apply to Wii with either, a lot of Wii owners have Mario Kart and NSMB, Galaxy, Zelda etc. Most don't have Xenoblade, Monster Hunter, or The Last Story.

I have some of those same games on PC, I can't see how anyone can play an FPS on a console if they had the choice of PC.

My PS3 Library consists of Ni No Kuni, Dark Souls, Demon Souls, Tales of Graces, and Valyria Chronicles.

360 Library is Red Dead Redemption, Tales of Vesperia, and Dragon's Dogma.

Almost all exclusives, the same reason I owned a Wii - everything else I want to play is better on PC.

Stop what? I wasn't flaming you or anything like that. I was bullying FPS console games a bit because I don't see anything new or innovative in them and those games are top sellers. I really don't see the appeal of FPS console games. And since sales were being discussed in the thread it seemed more than relevant to point that out.

Dark Souls is an awesome game and I'm sure that there are more great games that are Xbox/PS only that I simply don't know about. Although from what I read Xenoblade is one of the top console RPGs this generation and that's Wii only.

But yeah, if we are discussing sales and hardware:software ratios then I think that the sheer amount of FPS games sold on the Xbox and Playstation is relevant to the discussion because from what I have experienced those games are garbage. I wonder what the sales and that hardware:software term would look like if we took out of those bad games. I think that in a good game to good game comparison that all of those consoles would be pretty close.

I looked up that hardware:software ratio term (which I can't remember for the life of me) and found a little graph that showed how many games were purchased per system sold, the Xbox was far and away ahead of the rest of the pack. Then I looked up the top selling Xbox games... Yeah... Without those bad games the ratio would be down near the others.

Attach rate.

There are great games on all 3 systems. CoD and Madden have just been reshahsed crap for years. The original Modern Warfare was awesome though.

This whole discussion started with weak Wii U sales, not sure how it got dragged into console wars yet again. 360/PS3/Wii sales have no bearing on the Wii U.

It's not selling because it only has like 3 games worth owning (1 that comes with the Deluxe model), and people have burned through those by now - I'm positive Nintendo can weather the storm while they get more of their planned lineup out the door.

No more friend codes so Monster Hunter is going to be sick with tons of people to play with, should easily be able to sink 100 hours into that game.

Here's a more telling question/answer: How many people do you know that are happy with their Wii? How many people do you know that are happy with their Xbox 360?

I have a hacked Wii and every game I could possibly want loaded onto a hard drive, and I NEVER play the fucking thing, yet I'm still happily paying for Xbox 360/PS3 titles. My PS3 is hacked too, but I still buy shit for it.

Once I pick up my Wii U (like many other MH people still!) we'll have to play some MH.

All this software talk is garbage for the most part. Without the big name FPS games, Xbox and PS3 wouldn't be way ahead of the Wii or possibly even behind.

Like many people keep saying, there are still good niche games coming out on the Wii U that will increase hardware and software sales.

I don't follow this Monster Hunter thing, but isn't the Wii U game the third port of the least selling Monster Hunter (PC and X360 excluded...), a game that was already available on Wii in the US and sold poorly in Japan? How is that the system's savior?

MH on Wii brought in a lot of new players, it wasn't the best selling MH most likely because it wasn't portable which is how most people in Japan play MH.

MH3U is the upgraded version(2nd port) of MH Tri with over double the content. That is how most MH games work though, a basic version(I still put in 200+ hours in the "basic" version) and then an upgraded version(I expect 400-500 hours from this version).

MH3U in Japan has sold fairly well, especially for the 3DS. Also, MH Tri was the first MH for Nintendo, previously it was on PS2 and PSP.

The buzz around MH3U is pretty large. The largest the West has ever seen so far. The reason I've been saying it could help the Wii U out is a lot of MH players haven't even bought a Wii U yet. Many are hoping for a bundle of some sort. There was recently an Amazon deal to buy both the Wii U and 3DS MH games together for a cheaper price, but no console deal yet(except for EU).

Plus MH3U is releasing on the 3DS at the same time and the 2 systems can play with each other locally, and saves of the game can be imported/exported to be played on either system.

So you could have 1 guy playing on Wii U and 2 other friends in the living room on their 3DS playing with you locally, or you could find some people to play with online.

MH3 Tri on Wii just didn't have the online support thanks to Friend Codes, and playing with others is essential to Monster Hunter. You can get pretty far solo into the games but it's meant to be played like a mini MMO.

Not saying it's the system's savior or anything. The system doesn't really need "saving" since Nintendo isn't going to abandon it - but they need to get those first party titles out ASAP while they still have a window.

All this software talk is garbage for the most part. Without the big name FPS games, Xbox and PS3 wouldn't be way ahead of the Wii or possibly even behind.
Wii is still ahead of either console even with those big FPS games and their rehashes. Like I posted earlier, even if you get rid of all the motion games (which are attached as free games to all 3 systems but still count as "sold"), the Wii has still sold ~100 million more games than 360 or PS3, thanks to 34 mil from Mario Kart and 28mil from NSMBros. Now if you add PS3+360 together then it's more like 700mil vs 1100mil but that's really weighing the argument against Nintendo.

All 3 systems have awesome exclusive games that make them worth buying, so I really don't understand the Nintendo hate. Maybe people are just angry that the Wii was so successful and forced Sony/MS to make their own motion control to compete? I bought a 360 just for Tales of Vesperia and a PS3 just for Valkyria Chronicles/Demon Souls/Dark Souls, and a Nintendo just for Zelda (If I didn't have one already I'd have bought one for Xenoblade).

I see nothing wrong with Nintendo doing different things than MS/Sony, if all 3 consoles were the same hardware power with 95% of the same games shared, the market would be pretty boring and stagnant. To get people to buy their consoles they would have to push exclusives even more, like back in the 90s. Sony and MS have ruined their exclusives the way it is now so maybe that way would have kept the quality of Final Fantasy and Halo high.

Only console I've owned since my PS2, is a Wii. My PC plays all my hardcore games I want, so I have never had a need for a PS3/360. With PC I get Steam sales, cracked games, etc. I can play 95% of the games from PS3/360 with much better graphics. All I miss out on is a couple exclusive titles that I don't really care much about. And screw paying for online access. I already pay for internet. Plus I can't stand spending 50-60 bucks on a game.

Like I said I own a Wii (cracked) but even when I did buy some games for it, it was ones on sale pretty cheap like 20 bucks. Mario Galaxy 1, Zelda, etc. To me the cost of the system, and the quality of the exclusive titles, and the fact that my kids enjoy it a ton, made it a worthwhile purchase, whereas the 360/PS3 just arent. I have no urge to buy a WiiU as it is pricey, has no decent exclusive titles, and just doesn't seem as fun.

But lately I have been sucked into the whole Android game thing. Most of my gaming is casual games on my phone. I do think that tablets will really take a big chunk out of the gaming industry. You will still have your consoles and PC's, but a lot of the casual family gamers jumped from Wii's, to the new big casual thing, tablets.. and probably won't go back to consoles unless something really unique and affordable comes out like the Wii when it first did. These people don't care about graphics, only gameplay, and they can get their quality games, with easy controls, short gameplay, that they can play with friends and family all over the world, and only pay a buck of 2 for a game. Things like Words With Friends, Draw Something, Ruzzle, etc. The WiiU is just never going to achieve the success that the Wii did. Casual gaming is now dominated by tablets. Which is sad for Nintendo, but good for Google/Apple/Amazon.

Nintendo's best bet at this point would be to release a powerful Nintendo/Android tablet with bluetooth controllers and TV dock; And also create a Nintendo handheld and a phone on Android. I know the Sony Xperia Play tried this but they did many many things wrong, and it wasn't a flagship machine or anything, nor did it have any A titles. As crazy as it sounds, if they dropped the gimmicks like 3d, and made a Nintendo App Store and focused on making quality games with Wii quality graphics for the tablet, yet still function as an android tablet and can use google apps too, I bet it would be a HUGE hit. Also make a comparable phone and ipod like device with xperia like controls and 3DS-like power, and put out games on their store too for that, but running on Android backbone. They could jump on the backbone of tablets and SERIOUSLY dominate again. Most adults don't like to carry around handhelds due to the stigma, but wouldn't leave home without their phones. It's a huge potential market. I would buy a phone for myself and probably a tablet, and the handhelds for my kids. Just like Steam and Android sales, people impulse buy cheap apps, and if Nintendo could have first party and indie games ranging from a few bucks, up to 30 or so for a grade A title, they would make mint I bet, but they would have to focus fully on this platform, and not have a console too. Put their devs making the next Marios and Zeldas and SSB's etc making these flagship titles purely for these 2 machines. I'm sure Nintendo's R&D, if they are worth anything, are probably already planning for the leap into the tablet market, lets just hope they do it right. Also I wouldn't be suprised to see Microsoft try to make an Xbox tablet or phone in the next 5 years or so. Playstation maybe not, just because they have driven pretty much every portable they have tried, into the ground.

So I wanted to buy the new Wii Bundle with Zombiu and what not, mainly for the controller that is practically free with it.

I call Best Buy, they don't have it and Bestbuy.com doesn't have it, meaning Best Buy in the US doesn't have it.

I go to Bestbuy.ca and they have it, the rep from BB says I can try to order it from there.

Later on I call back because I have a few questions, the Best Buy rep says they don't have any BBs in Canada, that he thinks BestBuy.ca is a fake website, he was surprised they used the real BB phone number, and he also said, "Have you ever seen a website not end with 3 letters like .com or .org?" I honestly didn't know what to say.

Regardless, I have a $200 gift card I'd like to use at BB and these morons are not helping.

I flip through the kiosks from time to time, and Rayman has been the only game I've ever seen playable - and that demo has since been removed from every kiosk I'd played it on previously.

Just returned my Wii U to best buy today for a refund. Played through the Mario U game for a few days, then never touched the thing. Maybe in a year or so when the price hopefully drops and they have a little better game base I'll get one again. Cool little system, but almost zero appeal right now.
