it's been pointed out before, what exactly do EITHER of them have to gain from it being staged? you could MAYBE argue that the awards people figured they needed to drum up some interest, but usually they'd do that BEFORE the event, not DURING it... but then again it was early enough that maybe they hoped people would tune in to see a possible follow-up incident...
but smith DOES NOT come across well in this at all. he ABSOLUTELY doesn't look like he's defending his wife because he's seen ON CAMERA laughing at the joke and then we see jada roll her eyes. it's incredibly clear that jada gave will the same look for laughing at the joke and so he had to do SOMETHING to save face. except he's a weak man so all he can think to do is physically assault someone and make a scene.
and while rock comes out looking like a rockstar, the whole thing is instigated by a weak joke. you really think chris rock is going to agree to have a moment that is going to be watched OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER again with him telling a joke that barely got more than a polite chuckle?

It was a pretty tame ass joke. There was a moment where Chris Rock says "it was just a GI Jane joke" and then under his breathe says "oh I could......" and then takes a breathe and goes on with the next award intro. I wish we would have just said what he wanted to say. I'm sure it would have been something about Will should be more worried about the dicks going into Jada then the hair falling out of Jada.
