Windows 10

I'm looking at possibly upgrading the 15'ish computers at work to Windows 10, but we have multiple proprietary programs that barely worked with the Windows 7 upgrade, so I'm a little nervous about just straight upgrading to 10. I'd like to use dual boot to solve that problem, and this article seems to be fairly straightforward about how to do it:How to Dual-Boot Windows 10 with Windows 7 or 8

Anyone have any experience with this process? I've seen a few people mention dual boot in this thread, but if there was a guide I missed it when quickly looking back through it. Also, wouldn't this sort of give me a "fresh install" since Win 10 wouldn't really be upgrading the Win 7 files?

Build a test environment and..test the programs?

Dual booting with Win10 works how it would with any dual booting OS. You boot, you choose, it loads the OS of choice. Done. Although I don't see the point if you dont even know if the programs will work or not. So I would test them out, if they work, great, if not, stick with what does work. And hope that whoever developed your prop stuff has a workaround for win10 down the line.

Another option could be setting up a virtual environment in Win10. That gets rid of dual booting, and the vm instance is pretty straight forward(pick a compatble OS and go), but you'd still need to train the users on the basics.

But again, test before deploying.

Well, it seems as if it won't matter, as reading further into it, it seems that I would need to actually purchase a new Windows 10 license for every computer since the free upgrade is more of a trade-in, not just a free license. So if you want to keep your old Windows 7 or 8, you can't get a free version of 10. For our company that's a deal-breaker.

To clarify that a little, while I appreciate the advice, you're probably thinking like an actual IT person in a company that supports that. We are a small company with no IT to speak of, I'm just the guy that knows a little about computers here. There is no ability to build a test environment, as we have no spare computers lying around. And at least half, probably more (including mine), of our computers have processors that don't support virtualization, so that's out too.

I just thought that if it were as easy as it sounded, dual boot would solve a lot of issues, since we have some people that really want to upgrade to 10, and I'd prefer that everyone did because it would help make everything a little more uniform. But I know a couple of programs (that aren't made/upgraded any more) will likely have fits, so I hoped to sidestep those issues. What will have to happen now is that just no one will upgrade, and when a computer crashes and we have to buy a new one, we'll deal with the programs not working then. I've made them aware it is likely to happen, but if I go and do the upgrade and shit doesn't work, it becomes my problem. If it doesn't work because a computer died, it is a problem I'll be involved in solving, but it won't be my "fault" so to speak.

Is there a way to tell 10 to put a new virtual desktop in the secondary monitor window? I guess if I clone I would prefer it to go from stretch desktop on second monitor to two "primary monitors" do I don't have to open-Apple-ctrl-tab-arrow-pumpkin between just two.

Someone sell me on taking the time to make this upgrade tomorrow. I haven't found a good reason yet.

It's cool? I dunno, I really like it, it just feels zippy, efficient and stylish at the same time, at least after tweaking it down some.

I've hardly noticed any difference since I upgraded to Win10. But then again, my desktop usage consists of either starting Outlook, Chrome, or a Steam game so it's not like I'm scratching the surface much. The new task manager is excellent, as is the new dialogue for file transfers/copies/deletions. Otherwise I was planning on spending an hour or two doing a tour or whatever to see what else has been changed.

But really, the upgrade goes so smoothly (if you don't get caught in any traps like I did), that there's little reason not to.

The upgrade is fairly fast and for most people it just works. The OS is faster and more repsponsive then windows 7 imho. I had a problem with changing the default program files and users folders off my SSD but that was easily fixed.

Since I got on the new preview build my machine keeps waking up from sleep. Having to shut down to avoid it while I try a new solution now and then.

Win 10 is definitely faster than anything since XP imo, and faster than XP imo.

Didn't ask for Windows 10? Your PC may have downloaded it anyway | PCWorld

Whether you want Windows 10 or not, Microsoft says it may download the files to your PC regardless.

In a statement to the Inquirer, Microsoft confirmed that it automatically downloads Windows 10 installation files on eligible PCs, provided automatic updates are enabled through Windows Update. The download occurs even if users haven't opted in through the Windows 10 reservation dialog.

"For individuals who have chosen to receive automatic updates through Windows Update, we help upgradable devices get ready for Windows 10 by downloading the files they'll need if they decide to upgrade," Microsoft told the Inquirer. "When the upgrade is ready, the customer will be prompted to install Windows 10 on the device."

When reached for comment, Microsoft told PCWorld that the downloads occurred around the time of Windows 10's July 29 launch.

Gotta love it. People turn automatic updates on, and are angry/concerned when an update is downloaded. It's an update, like any other. It's just a huge update.

I seem to remember the same "warning" about Windows 7's larger updates.

Fuck Microsoft. I'm willing to give them (another) $100 for an 8.1 key and you can't buy them online in the US.

Reddit, like $25.
I have in the past, but the key is dead. Bought one, activated it (about 9 months ago), used it about 2 days, but now I can't switch that key to another machine like I can with all of my other legit 8.1 OEM keys. Says that the key is blocked.
