Even if all the top american athletes were playing soccer it would not be enough for the american national team to be very good. What you need is players that take part in a good championship or at the very least are in a team good enough to last in continental competitions. In this day and age that means playing in England, Germany and Spain or in a dozen other clubs around the world.
Obviously having top athletes play soccer would be a step in the right direction, but that would be just the first step.

Pretty sure if soccer was as popular here as say the NFL those clubs would be beating down our door to play here. That being said we don't much care so its not.
Soccer really is something you play as a kid here in the US. It's even spawned a subculture it's so popular as a child's game. Soccer mom's, SUV's etc.

There is plenty of money in Soccer as is, Manchester City has the highest payroll in the world and the best players make money commensurate with any of our top athletes here in the States. The issue is more in that young kids that can play Soccer have no idea that there is that avenue available to them, you are starting to kind of see it with a US kid joining Barca's academy last year. You can't say it's not appealing in that you get to travel the world, make a ton of money and bang hot chicks all the time. Sounds like a rough life....

The team which won the Stanley Cup had 5 American players and 21 Canadian players on their roster. America dilutes its sporting interest four ways, it's difficult to compete in against nations which are completely focused on just that one sport as if it were a national religion.

women's football is a joke compared to men's.
There's a reason most of the US team is army brats from Europe. You can make millions in the US in one of the 3-4 sports, or you can make millions in half the European football leagues. But why would you choose to move to Europe, a country where you think everyone hates you anyways and with a language you don't understand (yes, including England, you know it's true). The only argument for a European football career is that there's more open positions with a millionaire's salary on them.
