The sub GK only held 2 out of 20 penalties against him... it's not like he's some sort of god for them.
2/20 is still better than 0/? (commentators in the game said the GK never saved one pen before which is... well.. shit)

Well... if the penalty is not well placed and the keeper chose the correct side it's legitimate to hope for a save. That was the case for two of them. One was just wide enough and the other just hit hard enough OR the keeper did not dive far enough and did not have a firm enough hand.

2 hours of clean sheet play? Then the Dutch only manage to put 2/5 in the back of the net during PKs?

Yeah, lets blame the Keeper. Fuckin' Dutch.

One of the great things about soccer is that it mimics life.. Those that should win often don't, and being a lying asshole is often rewarded.

In the immortal words of Bill Shankly: 'Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.'

Stopping a penalty is incredibly difficult for a keeper. You have to stay on the line, and most of the times the ball is shot with such speed it's impossible to think, react and and move in the split second it takes for a ball to reach the goal line. Only if the keeper can be trained and instructed before a game (Krul) on how the opponents take their penalties, you stand a little bit better chance. Upper left and right corners in the goal are impossible to reach in a penalty even if you're 6 foot 2. You have 0 time to take the extra step it takes to reach. Lower left and right corners are tough to get to because it just takes too long to dive sideways and land in front of the ball.

All that aside, the Dutch at least tried to attack, even with 9 argentinian defenders on the goalline and Messi taking a stroll on the other half of the field praying for a counter. Halfway through the second half you saw argentina digging in, and wait it out for penalties. Heck their players couldn't even fucking steal the ball from Cilessen. Good job Orange, sad to see you guys not getting what you deserved.

I forget where I saw it but there was some study that showed if the keeper actually waited to see where the ball was kicked and then reacted it was impossible for him to stop the kick. GKs have to guess. Quite frankly though the game shouldn't have to be decided on PKs, if it gets that far you dun goofed.

The study of penalty kicks. This wasnt the study I remember reading but this one is just as good.

The trick is to see how they move towards the ball, knowing if they kick with left or right and knowing their preferred side of the goal. And then it still is a coin flip if you actually are diving towards the good side. Krul may only have stopped 2 penalties out of 20 in his career, but when he knew he was selected for the dutch team they started training him in stopping penalties. And out of the 4 he got, he stopped 2 but was in the right corner on all 4 pk's. Krul's secret weapon was intimidation, stepping up to the kicker and break his concentration, blatantly telling the player wich side he was going to kick to. The ref in the Argentina game knew this and told Cilessen immediately he would be carded if he pulled that shit.

Former brasilian keeper Taffarel was a true penalty killer. That guy was just freakishly good at stopping them.
