As of a February 2012 interview at Ten Ton Hammer it is reported there are still at least 60 dedicated developers on the MMO and the project is still moving forward
What's the deal with this game.. I remember hearing about it like 5 years ago..

A lot of the staff was cut after CCP's Incarna debacle. CCP's focus switched much more to EvE and Dust514. Would not be surprised if this never saw the light of day.

That would suck pretty bad, CCCP is one of the few companies that could make a truly innovative mmo.

It's functionally mothballed. In 2006, CCP purchased White Wolf Publishing, the owners of the World of Darkness IP. The White Wolf offices were transitioned over to CCP, along with a major expansion and hiring spree in Atlanta. Several prominent folks from White Wolf took new roles in the merged company, many of them involved in the World of Darkness MMO. All was well.

Then CCP went and introduced microtransactions to EVE, and the CEO got outed as saying some fairly insensitive things about his (very sensitive) player base. EVE took a major hit, CCP's projections started to look grim, and they had some hard choices to make. They were balls deep in Incarna despite it's relative unpopularity with EVE players, but they also needed the technology base for the WoD MMO. Meanwhile, they also had Dust on the horizon, and it was determined that Dust had a better chance of success for whatever reason.

The Atlanta office of CCP took a really major hit with some widespread layoffs. A lot of the old White Wolf folks who had stayed on with CCP were let go, and production on WoD was severely curtailed. It's technically still "in development", but I haven't heard anything in the grapevine about it for a long time. Meanwhile, a group of the old publishing wing of White Wolf have launched a new company called Onyx Path which has bought a few of White Wolf's lesser known properties (Aeonverse, specifically), and licensed the rest. They're now continuing to publish PDF books for all of White Wolf's games, including 20th anniversary versions of the original WoD flagship titles via Kickstarter. It's been a great success for them. Whereas the PDF business was starting to thrive but had virtually no support from CCP (who only bought White Wolf in the first place for it's IP), Onyx Path is doing quite well as a small start up that's dedicated to publishing new rpg books without all the overhead and scheduling hassle of a print business.

The last official word I'd heard was that the game was on the back burner until Dust launches.

Call me cynical, but if we see more than a loading screen and a few sketches, I'll be mightily impressed.

From the article_sl said:
When the World of Darkness MMO was first announced in November 2006, it was just an idea and we knew that it wouldn't be released any time soon. The chance to play a sandbox game set in the Vampire: The Masquerade universe nevertheless made fans of the series go nuts, but now over six years later we haven't seen much progress on the game. At EVE Fanfest 2013 today, CCP laid the current state of development bare for all to see and showed some plans for the coming year. There are now 70 people on the WoD team, and they've spent the past week working on everything from art tools and server infrastructure to vampire powers and social options.

Development plans for 2013 include working on out-of-game web-based social tools, clothing systems, and PvE game environments. There are also plans to work on item creation, but direct crafting is probably not on the cards. As the presenter put it, "You're a powerful, immortal lord of the night. You don't want to stitch a shirt." Though the game is still in the pre-production stage, CCP was keen to show off the tools it's made to speed up the development process. "Some of these videos are a bit dry and technical," joked the presenter, but it came across as more real and honest than another trailer or musings on theoretical gameplay.

CCP showed some interesting tools that it will use to rapidly develop procedural content like buildings and cityscapes. It's not the gameplay fans were eager to see, but it was an honest look at the state of the game and it shows that development really is still ongoing. We saw a building going through the entire development system from basic block shapes to the graphically impressive final results, with plenty of eye candy to go around. As an indie game developer who specialises in shader programming, I can say that the video they showed of shader tech was genuinely impressive. Whenever World of Darkness finally does release, it's going to look amazing.

Developers also showed video footage of their own internal visual targets running in the WoD engine but were adamant that we not film it since it's not actual gameplay footage and may give a false impression of how far along development is. The animations were clearly unfinished and much of the graphical detail was added in post-processing, but the video clearly showed the direction the game is heading and it looks like it'll be worth the wait.

Translation: WIS and NEX were simply a testbed for our WOD model, which will consist of emo glitter vampire faggots buying gear reminiscent of 2nd life fish-net stockings and leather bondage gear for exorbitant prices from our fully integrated online store. If we were to have player crafting, as in EVE - a game not originally designed with microtransactions in mind - we would only be undercutting our own game's design,AND WE CAN'T HAVE THAT!

It is actually, literally saddening that it sounds like CCP, one of the only companies I would have thought capable of creating a sandbox MMO that would do WoD justice, is going to take such a gigantic shit on WoD as a whole.

I mean, maybe I'm wrong and my impressions are way off the mark. Maybe it WON'T be an MMO based around buying gear for your vampire Barbie-doll character. I mean...I actually hope and pray that I'm completely wrong, srsly...but so far I haven't actually seen anything that makes me thinks otherwise, sadly enough.

Kinda sad that it looks like they'll be focusing more or less exclusively on vampires, they were always one of the less interesting WoD groups.

it seems that they are alluding that it won't be a minecraftmmo and more ... social -- perhaps to further appeal to females and to be different.

as a sidebar, generally the type of player (female) who i envision trying out a game (not knowing anything about it other than the fact it has vampires in it) would not be the type of player with whom i would want to play with being that vampires are largely teen idolized fad right now. moreover, i don't like playing with women when there are other guys around as it changes the dynamic (at least, in pug fps).
then again, if it's new gameplay, i'm intrigued.

But probably the easiest for players to understand and developers to make/code.

Trying to squish Mage into an MMO would be disappointing no matter who much time and money you spent on it.
