Also informed by 30's Spain. I think it was mostly informed by the USSR under Stalin though. Animal Farm most certainly was. However in the modern era 1984 has become shorthand for "Orwell can be ascribed to the political party I don't agree with", often by young people who don't know much of anything about that violent era.

The fact he wrote animal farm as a response to his experiences in Spain should tell you everything about his thinking afterwards. 1984 was not a rebuke or inspired by fascism. It was a direct response to his experience with socialists and how they operate.

Right, right and ignoring the reasons he joined the fight against the Nationalists, and ignoring any impact/influence that WW2 might have had on him in order to arrive at "1984 is about left-wing authoritarianism" or "is about <insert the opposite" side is a far more nuanced take.
